Those who do not meditate now, eating the food of others becomes a debt. Those who merely hold outward appearances, what kind of monastic identity do they obtain? After the body is destroyed and death occurs, in order not to be mixed with the fault of arrogance, they will fall into evil destinies and be born in hell. Therefore, one should learn in this way: as long as life lasts, those monks who are of an inquiring nature will be happy and joyful in mind. After the body is destroyed and death occurs, they will also be born among the gods in the happy realms of higher heavens. By the virtue of destroying arrogance, from then on, nirvana will also occur. Furthermore, what is the twelfth factor that obstructs meditation? It is like this: being called "having many friends" will do all meaningless things. Monks will surely enter into burning. When there are many friends, monks will become very distracted, and because of many affairs, the mind will also become distracted, without meditation and without the act of meditation. For those who have firmly renounced household life, having completely abandoned friends and non-enemies, if even one friend should not be associated with, what need is there to mention many friends? When a lazy person becomes a monk in name only and wanders around in the homes of others, merely seeing this, the mind will become distracted. When the eyes see forms, they will change. The consciousness of the eyes will not be calmed. It will not be calmed on the object of focus. Attention will not abide closely. It will not be in equipoise. It will not shorten the times. One is very eager to see friends. Similarly, after hearing sounds, one will not enter into equipoise, and one will not focus on the object of focus. When that attention enters into other things, it will not be calmed. Uncalmed attention.
