One should generate a perception of extreme displeasure towards all these desire realms. Kauṇḍinya, how should a wise person generate a perception of extreme displeasure towards the gods who dwell in the form realm? Those beings who dwell in the form realm, the sixteen, also practice worldly meditations among the ranks of the gods. However, they are not completely liberated from the sufferings associated with defilements. They are tormented by many sufferings. They are tormented by the sufferings of existence that remain. They are those who do not look to the other shore. They are those who do not look to liberation. They are not completely liberated from the sufferings of the lower realms. If they are tormented by these sufferings, then what wise person would feel joy and generate desire for them? Thus, a wise person should generate a perception of extreme displeasure towards the form realm. Furthermore, in the form realm, those beings who are truly endowed with undefiled meditation, and who abide without being completely liberated, are tormented by sufferings at the time of the noble path. They are tormented by the sufferings of completely seeking everything. They are tormented by the sufferings of not having mastery over the samādhi of all the lands. They are tormented by the sufferings of not having mastery over the samādhi that is common to solitary realizers. They are tormented by the sufferings of not having mastery over the sphere of activity of the Tathāgata. Those who attain parinirvāṇa simultaneously are all tormented by these sufferings. Thus, a wise person should generate a perception of extreme displeasure towards the form realm. Kauṇḍinya, how should a wise person generate a perception of extreme displeasure towards the formless realm? Even in those four abodes of the gods of the formless realm, beings are endowed with samādhi associated with defilements. All of them are not completely liberated from the sufferings associated with defilements. They are tormented by these sufferings. They are all the lands of learners and non-learners.

They are those who have no control over everything. They are tormented by those sufferings. They are tormented by the suffering of not hearing the Dharma. They are tormented by the suffering of not being able to permanently cut off all cravings. Then they are tormented by the nature of the law of death and the suffering of going with the remainder. They are not completely liberated from the suffering of all the evil destinies. They are tormented by those sufferings. Therefore, the wise should generate a perception of extreme displeasure towards that formless realm. Through those eight aspects, all existence is manifestly accomplished in the prison of the three realms. The wise should generate such a complete perception of displeasure and cultivate the Noble Eightfold Path with strong desire. Kaundinya, this is the perception of extreme displeasure towards all the world. What is the perception of extreme displeasure towards the world of formations? It is called the three formations, namely: bodily formation, verbal formation, and mental formation. What is bodily formation? Breathing in and breathing out are called bodily formations. What is verbal formation? Thinking and analyzing are called verbal formations. What are mental formations? Discernment and thought. These are called mental formations. These three formations are the common characteristics of all sentient beings. How should the wise generate a perception of extreme displeasure towards the formations? The wise should closely examine the signs of breathing in and breathing out, in terms of newness and oldness, as well as the form of coldness, the form of warmth, and the form of disharmony. After closely examining the signs of all the body's arising breathing in and all the body's breathing out, and the signs of the doors of wounds, one thinks that these formations are truly arising from what has not arisen, and after arising, they disappear, and everything is like lightning.

One should focus on the perception of exhaustion in all things, and one should focus on the perception of non-existence. Wherever one makes distinctions, all discriminations arise. In those discriminations, the perception of exhaustion and the perception of non-existence arise. Regarding that dharma itself, whether one generates a perception of coolness, or a perception of warmth, or a perception of incongruity, similarly, whether one generates a perception of coarseness or oldness, all arise from these perceptions and mental activities. It will become perceiving exhaustion in all things and perceiving things as objects. He will perceive exhaustion in all conditioned things, perceive destruction, perceive detachment, and will focus on cessation. He sees the prior and posterior limits of all conditioned things, therefore it is called perceiving exhaustion in all things, and will become focusing on cessation. Whoever thus focuses on conditioned things, having made extremely good practice, will become perceiving impermanence in all conditioned things, perceiving extreme destruction, perceiving instability, perceiving impermanence, perceiving non-existence, and perceiving selflessness. Thus, endowed with a mind of right effort, knowing as it truly is, he will generate a perception of displeasure in all conditioned things. Likewise, again, with the cessation focused on individual observation, or the cessation focused on non-individual observation, he recollects the three times. He abandons all connections, purifies sight, abandons the stream of cyclic existence, enters the undefiled truth, and obtains the fruit of stream-entry. The wise Kaundinya thus generates a perception of displeasure in the world of all conditioned things. This Kaundinya is the object of practice for the perception of displeasure. What is the perception of incongruity regarding the Dharma garment? Whenever the wise Kaundinya sees the Dharma garment, or touches it, or makes it into a lower garment, or wears it, or places it, or hides it, at all times he thinks, "This is human skin." It is with blood.
