It is not. They see what is displeasing, not what is pleasing. They see what is ugly, not what is beautiful. They see what is bad, not what is good. Therefore, in that place, they will experience rough, unbearable, and intense feelings of suffering. There, whatever sound they hear with their ears, whatever smell they smell with their noses, whatever taste they taste with their tongues, whatever touch they feel with their bodies, and whatever phenomena they discern with their minds, all of these are disagreeable, not agreeable. They are displeasing, not pleasing. They are ugly, not beautiful. They are bad, not good. Their bodies are intensely burning, they eat iron lumps, and they drink iron and copper. Therefore, in that place, they will experience rough, unbearable, and intense feelings of suffering. As long as the sinful deeds of those who, in the past, as humans, have committed misdeeds with their corresponding bodies, and have committed misdeeds with their speech and minds, are not exhausted and purified, they will not die and transmigrate from there. Kaundinya, behold, beings desire happiness but are incompatible with suffering. Who would rejoice in and desire that hellish realm of beings? This is the first realm of those who commit misdeeds, and the wise should generate a feeling of displeasure towards it. Kaundinya, how should the wise generate a feeling of displeasure towards the birth of animals? Kaundinya, some animals have bodies that are extremely small, such as one-fiftieth of the tip of a hair. Some are like dust motes in sunlight, and some are the size of junipers. Some obtain or will obtain bodies that are a hundred thousand yojanas in size. Some have lives that last only a moment, while others have lives that last for an eon.

There, they do not practice Dharma, they do not do good. There, they have abandoned shame and embarrassment, entered without compassion, without love, always tormented by suffering, always afraid, devouring each other, fully in accordance with all paths of unwholesome actions, having entered into the darkness of ignorance, therefore those who go to bad destinies and those who go to good destinies, for non-objects of practice, they have minds turned upside down to perform virtuous actions. Which wise person would like and desire such a birthplace of animals always tormented by suffering in the darkness of ignorance? This is the second path of evil conduct, and the wise should generate a feeling of displeasure towards it. Kauṇḍinya, how should the wise also generate a feeling of displeasure towards the birthplace of the realm of pretas? Kauṇḍinya, there are some pretas whose bodies are one cubit high, some are one person high, some obtain bodies up to a thousand yojanas, and they are all naked, rough, black, their bodies extremely dry and devoid of flesh and blood, always tormented by hunger and thirst, without food and drink, inhaling and exhaling fire, possessing minds of extreme hatred towards each other, entering without compassion, always with tired bodies, and without cool clouds. Some have food of iron and copper. Some have iron mortars. Some have hot pus and blood. Some have dust that is always hot. Some have corpses that are always hot. Some have boiled urine. Some have wind that is always hot. Some have roots, leaves, flowers, fruits, and food made of wood that is blazing. And even that is difficult and sometimes barely obtained with difficulty. Some pretas have a lifespan of a thousand years. Some have a lifespan of up to a hundred thousand years, always separated from happiness, and suffering.

If beings are tormented by suffering and plunged into the darkness of ignorance, which wise person would generate joy towards the pretas? This is the third realm of evil destinies, therefore the wise should generate a concept of displeasure. Kaundinya, how should the wise generate a concept of displeasure towards this human world? This human world is where beings are tormented by suffering, the suffering of aging, the suffering of sickness, the suffering of death, the suffering of encountering unpleasant things, the suffering of separation from pleasant things, and the suffering of various kinds of seeking, strife, anger, jealousy, miserliness, speaking divisive words, speaking harsh words, greed, cold, heat, and the suffering of harming each other. Constantly, in this human world, beings are tormented by the suffering of remembering death, the suffering of short life, and the suffering of remembering going to the next world, which wise person would generate desire for the human world and feel joy? This is the fourth mixed realm, therefore the wise should generate a concept of displeasure. Kaundinya, how should the wise generate a concept of displeasure towards the world of the gods? Even among those six desire realm gods, beings are tormented by the suffering of craving for desire, tormented by the suffering of giving, enjoying, and closely engaging. They are tormented by the suffering of the gradual exhaustion of previously accumulated roots of virtue, tormented by the suffering of various kinds of seeking, tormented by the suffering of separation from pleasant things, tormented by the suffering of death due to the exhaustion of merit. And again and again they are tormented by the suffering of the lower realms, this is the fifth concept of displeasure towards the desire realm gods. This is the fifth aspect, the wise
