The Fourth Chapter: The Chapter on the Arising of Karma. The Fourth Chapter: The Chapter on the Arising of Karma. Then, the Blessed One spoke to those four messengers and other Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, saying: "Sons of good family, abide in this Buddha-field with your respective virtuous practices." Then, those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, together with their retinues, sat in the lotus position as was appropriate to their positions, and entered into the Samadhi of Endurance, having cultivated it diligently. Some of those who had entered into Samadhi emitted light from their bodies like that of a butter lamp. Others emitted light like that of a hundred thousand million suns and moons. Then, at that time, the Venerable Ajnata-Kaundinya thought to himself: "By the power of the Buddha, how should I request the Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha to extensively and correctly reveal all four Dharani-mantras, and to cause the beings who have come to the Sahā world to listen, so that they may abandon all doubts, obtain illumination of all Dharmas, be free from spectacle, transcend hesitation and doubt, quickly enter without fault, possess the Dharma of not falling into wrong views, and be inclined towards higher realms?" Then, the Venerable Ajnata-Kaundinya, in the direction of the Blessed One, folded his palms, bowed respectfully, and sat silently. Then, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Ajnata-Kaundinya: "Kaundinya, do you wish to make a request to the Tathagata?" He replied: "Venerable Blessed One, it is so. Venerable Sugata, it is so. Venerable Blessed One, if making a request would lead to a prophecy, then please grant me the opportunity to make some requests to the Tathagata." The Blessed One said: "Kaundinya, ask the Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha whatever you desire, and I will prophesy according to your requests, and how you will be with the gods, etc."

Just as the manifestation of the pure world, may your heart rejoice. Then, the venerable Ajnata-Kaundinya addressed the Blessed One, saying: Venerable One, the Blessed One has said, "The companion of a person is craving, the companion is craving." In what way does the Thus-Gone One regard craving as the companion of a person? Thus, the Thus-Gone One said that the companion of a man, craving, causes long and repeated cycles of rebirth and repeated conception. The Blessed One instructed: Kaundinya, it is good, good that you ask for the benefit of many beings, for the happiness of many beings, and ask in a timely manner. Kaundinya, therefore, listen well and keep it in mind, and I will tell you. Venerable Blessed One, so it is, after reporting, the venerable Ajnata-Kaundinya listened to the teachings of the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed him thus: Kaundinya, what is called craving is three cravings. What are the three? Desire craving, form craving, and formless craving. The Sutra of the Greatly Expanded Holy Assembly, called "Essence of the Sun," chapter six. Furthermore, there are three cravings: craving for existence, craving for destruction, and craving for Dharma. Kaundinya, what are the desire cravings among them? What is called desires refers to sexual intercourse, in which the unrestrained are devoted to the pleasurable union of desires, and those of inferior nature rejoice. Beings are completely tormented by desire, and arising from desire, they correctly take up and abide in the path of the ten non-virtuous actions. Due to that cause and that condition, the hell realms of beings appear. The animal realm, the realm of Yama, and the poverty of yakshas also appear. Due to the cause of desire, beings in the cycle of existence with the five destinies will experience various unbearable and harsh feelings of suffering. They will not be afraid. They have abandoned shame and embarrassment and are separated from the roots of virtue.

Through a hundred methods, one may occasionally find oneself. Those, due to the cause of desire, repeatedly commit misdeeds of body, speech, and mind, inciting everything from so-called various evil deeds up to the deeds of immediate retribution. Those repeatedly and for a long time will experience harsh and unbearable feelings in the evil realms. All are due to the cause of desire, the basis of desire, and the faults examined by the latent tendencies of desire. Therefore, the Tathagata teaches the Dharma to abandon desire. He sees the faults of desires as they truly are. Those beings, knowing the faults of desires, understand them individually as they truly are. For example, desires are unpleasant, like the Kimpaka fruit; desires are like a pile of firebrands; like a pot of poison; desires are like land smeared with filth; desires are like the edge of a razor; like thieves; like the home of an outcast; like a burning iron pillar; like falling hail; like a venomous snake; like enemies; like a solitary path; like an island of ogres; like an executioner; like a broom. Knowing desires to be like a charnel ground, being attached to desires, clinging to desires, being completely tormented by desires, arising from desires, and knowing the faults of desires. Therefore, by knowing the faults of desires, one becomes weary and dwells in cultivating thoughts of Dharma and rejoicing in upholding discipline. One becomes a seeker of Dharma, rejoices in the joy of Dharma, accumulates the wealth of Dharma, purifies the mind of Dharma, is fully endowed with the path of Dharma, and is devoted to Dharma. At the time of death, those who remember the Dharma and abide with a mind moistened by the Dharma, ripened by the Dharma, wherever they look, in every direction, the Buddha, the Bhagavan, abides, lives, and exists.
