There, he sees it as it is, just as it is. He relies on this and meditates on it repeatedly, and just as at night, he sees it as it is in the daytime as well, and he generates a perception of displeasure towards all the worlds. He thinks to himself: 'I am afflicted by the fear of old age and death, so I must completely break this drum of old age and death, leaving no remainder.' How can I completely break the drum of old age and death? I must thoroughly examine this pile of bones separately, so that it can be completely broken, without a doubt. Having thought this, he examines this pile of bones, which is complete with everything, separately, and he keeps in mind the perception of whiteness in all of it, and this becomes his dwelling place. He thinks from 'This is my skull bone' to 'This is my toe bone' and examines them separately in this way, thinking, 'In order to break this drum of old age and death, where should I begin with insight?' He thinks to himself: 'By gathering the breath of the mouth and nose, I must completely break this drum of old age and death, that is, my own pile of bones.' Having thought this, he gathers the breath at the tip of the nose and begins to practice correctly, causing the bones to disintegrate into particles. It is carried by the wind. By that means, all of his own pile of bones will be destroyed. Just as all of his own pile of bones has been carried away by the wind without any remainder, he abandons the perception of bones that arose in his own body, and emptiness appears to him there, and this is the first branch of emptiness. The Sutra of the Essence of the Sun, the Great and Vast Division of the Holy One, Volume Seven. Furthermore, emptiness of the inner self appears to him there. For him, the external becomes the perception of form. He thinks to himself: 'I must completely destroy all appearances of form with this gathering of breath.' Having thought this, he gathers the breath in this way, causing all appearances of form in the external world, whatever they may be, to be destroyed by the wind. He, in all ways, internal or external,

Having abandoned all appearances of form and paying particular attention, this is the second branch of emptiness. Again, he thinks thus: All the appearances of form that I have abandoned appear empty to me, but not to others. Therefore, this mind of mine, which constantly contemplates like the wind, is not completely liberated, so I should abandon it. Dharma does not come from anywhere, nor does it go anywhere. He abandons thought by means of such a way of not going, or by means of his own way of going; this is the third branch of emptiness. Again, he thinks thus: Is there anything truly existent in all conditioned things? Then, having recognized that which has become manifestly true, he recognizes all arising dharmas, whatever they may be, as the nature of cessation, and thereby knows that all three realms are empty and not true. Thus, his actions become greatly purified and pacified; this is the fourth branch of emptiness. Some abide here in the first fruit. Some meditate on tolerance in accordance with it. Some touch enlightenment as time and conditions dictate. Whoever strives to completely pacify thought and examination will be completely pacified. He enters into the samadhi of cessation, and by ceasing as he thinks, he spends a day and a night, and even spends countless eons. At first, as soon as he gets up, in the second moment, when the afflictions are exhausted, life is also exhausted, and then he enters into complete nirvana with his head level. This is the eighth Dharani mantra that accords with emptiness, which is uncommon to each individual and accords with the truth, a Dharani mantra of great power, great benefit, which completely exhausts all desires of desire, which completely exhausts all desires of form and formlessness, and even removes the burden of suffering. This is the Dharani mantra in accordance with emptiness, spoken to me by the Tathagata Mountain King Tathagata, Bodhisattva Mahasattva.
