One who does not strive diligently in this, should be known as not being a Bodhisattva who speaks truthfully. Shariputra, by mere name one cannot realize unexcelled perfect enlightenment, but only one endowed with wisdom can realize unexcelled perfect enlightenment. From what does that wisdom necessarily arise? Wisdom arises from much learning. Shariputra, therefore you should realize it directly, and you should understand it individually. How can a sentient being who has entered the Bodhisattva path have doubts about much learning? If that Bodhisattva intends to benefit sentient beings, the evil Mara will create obstacles. Shariputra, a Bodhisattva who, after generating the mind [of enlightenment], does not strive diligently in much learning is indeed blessed by the evil Mara. Therefore, Shariputra, wishing to fully know all the deeds of Mara, one should exert effort in diligence. One should not prioritize words, one should know the actions of the wise, and one should know the actions that are praised by the whole world. Shariputra, therefore, with diligence that is superior to all the world, and with ethics that are superior to all the world, one will realize unexcelled perfect enlightenment. Shariputra, although many seek this state, there are none who diligently and truly practice it, and they will also lose the ten powers of the Tathagata, and the wisdom that is superior to all the world, and they will lose their vows. Therefore, Shariputra, a Bodhisattva should speak words that will please all sentient beings. A Bodhisattva should not speak for his own benefit. A Bodhisattva should not diminish his diligence. Shariputra, out of a thousand, one may succeed, or none may succeed. Shariputra, counting to ten thousand, twenty thousand, thirty thousand, forty thousand, fifty thousand, and even hundreds of millions.

Or one can achieve it, or one cannot. What is the reason for that? Shariputra, it is difficult for someone who abides in this practice of a Bodhisattva to appear. Shariputra, therefore, in order to seek the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, one should generate the mind in this way: 'I shall make all sentient beings endure what is difficult to endure, tolerate what is difficult to tolerate, and for the sake of seeking the Dharma, I shall strive with great joy, not for the sake of seeking enjoyment.' What is the reason for that? Seeking the Dharma is seeking wisdom, and one should not be arrogant or excessively arrogant because of obtaining desires. Therefore, for sentient beings who have truly entered the Bodhisattva vehicle, wisdom should be prioritized, and enjoyment should not be prioritized. Shariputra, if that is the case, a Bodhisattva should diligently engage in this giving of the Dharma. Shariputra, should a Bodhisattva seek extensive learning and knowledge in this regard? Shariputra, in this regard, a Bodhisattva should send four men to the four directions, saying, 'Bring back the well-spoken teachings that you have heard.' He should also send four other men, saying, 'You should diligently attend to and care for those who are ill.' Shariputra, a Bodhisattva should also pervade the four directions with a mind of loving-kindness and maintain a mind that follows the Dharma. He should also go to whatever direction he hears the Dharma. Shariputra, a Bodhisattva should seek the Dharma in this way, and this is known as seeking extensive learning. Shariputra, these four dharmas are what enable Bodhisattvas to attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Shariputra, in the past, there was a Bodhisattva named Wise Diligence. At that time, there also appeared a Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened Buddha named Excellent Birth. After he passed into complete nirvana, when his teachings remained, this Bodhisattva named Wise Diligence was circumambulating and paying homage to a stupa, the Bodhi tree...

Oṅgālavā departed from that place and went away. When he saw the Bodhi tree, he wept bitterly and said: "The Blessed One, the Tathāgata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha, sat here and attained the unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment. The Blessed One, the Tathāgata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha, subdued the army of Māras with their mounts here. For the sake of this lion throne, the Blessed One, the Tathāgata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha, practiced austerities for countless hundreds of thousands of kalpas. The Blessed One, the Tathāgata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha, remained here for seven days in a single vajra posture." When the Blessed One, the Tathāgata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha, was dwelling here, those gods who saw the Blessed One and were prostrated to by countless billions of gods, they have indeed obtained great benefit! When will I also awaken to the unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment?" Thus, he wept bitterly at the root of the Bodhi tree for eight days and nights. During that time, he did not partake of any food or drink. Then, gods from the Pure Abode came near to him and said to him: "Do not grieve excessively, but seek out the qualities of the Buddha!" He said: "Do you know the qualities of the Buddha?" They replied: "We do not know, but you should nourish this body with rice and warm porridge, strive to find food, and do not let yourself die prematurely." He replied: "I am not aware that my body has become weak, but where should I go? I will end my life here." Thus, he wept day and night for seven days, and said, "I will end my life." (Li Thang Kanjur, vol. Za, 58A) Shariputra, his diligence was thus diminished by sixty billion kalpas. Shariputra, that Bodhisattva, under him, awakened to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment in twenty-five billion kalpas.
