Then he manifested and perfectly awakened into complete and perfect enlightenment. After manifesting and perfectly awakening into unsurpassed complete and perfect enlightenment, he fully matured hundreds of thousands of millions of sentient beings in unsurpassed complete and perfect enlightenment, never to regress. The measure of his lifespan is immeasurable, and the Sangha of Hearers here has also become immeasurable and incalculable. Shariputra, why is it called 'the diligence of the wise'? Because he is always diligent in renunciation, always diligent in initiating diligence, and always diligent in much learning. Shariputra, with such diligence, the diligence of the wise, the Bodhisattva manifests and perfectly awakens into unsurpassed complete and perfect enlightenment. Shariputra, if a Bodhisattva possesses four qualities, he is endowed with wisdom and will quickly manifest and perfectly awaken into unsurpassed complete and perfect enlightenment. What are the four? Shariputra, the Bodhisattva is one who has heard much, one who retains what he has heard, one who accumulates what he has heard, and one who is respectful to elders, middle-aged, and newly trained practitioners who share the same pure conduct. When asked, he points with his right hand, saying, 'The path is this, the path is this,' and he is diligent in teaching the Dharma. Shariputra, if a Bodhisattva possesses these four qualities, he will become endowed with wisdom and will quickly manifest and perfectly awaken into unsurpassed complete and perfect enlightenment. How should one seek much learning? Abandoning one's own desires, one should abide in the treatises of the Khenpo and Acharya, and be respectful. Four things should be completely abandoned. What are the four? Sleep, drowsiness, frivolous talk, anger, and pride. These four things should be completely abandoned. One should become accustomed to four things. What are the four? Getting used to not sleeping, initiating diligence and becoming of a walking nature, being respectful and without pride in serving the Khenpo and Acharya, and retaining much learning by generating respect for others, and placing it in one's heart.

It is to make the words complete. If one possesses these four dharmas, then one is seeking to hear. These four dharmas also please the teacher. What are the four? They are: certainty and friendship, steadfast friendship, abiding in the Dharma, and possessing good words of certainty. If one possesses these four dharmas, one pleases the teacher. If one possesses four dharmas oneself, one will obtain joy. What are the four? They are: that one's own seeking is meaningful, that one obtains joy oneself; that one possesses the treasure of hearing; that one possesses the heap of wisdom by relying on this; and that when giving the Dharma as a gift to others, joy and delight arise. If one possesses these four dharmas, the Bodhisattva himself will obtain joy. Therefore, seeking to hear in such a way, one should be respectful, possess dignity, possess service, not be arrogant, seek the meaning of taming, seek the meaning of peace, seek the meaning of completely passing beyond sorrow, and also seek the meaning of taming for others, seek the meaning of peace for others, and do the meaning of liberation from suffering for others, not just doing benefit for oneself alone. Seeking to hear in this way, and completely seeking to hear in this way, if one also increases the wisdom of seeing the Dharma in this life, then what need is there to speak of the view of the next life? That wisdom is also accomplished by diligently engaging in hearing. If a Bodhisattva does not diligently engage in hearing, then one should remember the bald-headed one (referring to those who do not value listening to the Dharma). Therefore, one should also be respectful to those who practice the same Brahmacharya. One should abide in front, not despise, not speak, not wash one's feet, not chew toothpicks in front, not spit in front, not speak in a loud voice, not speak without being asked, not interrupt speech, not leave without speaking, not have thoughts of before and after, not speak too much even a little, not speak other idle words, not speak inferior words, when others are asked, one should not have others answer, one should answer the question that was asked. One should not speak the words of thieves, one should rely on the Sutra Pitaka. One should protect one's own and others' minds, and practice virtue that is in accordance with this.
