For individuals belonging to the Hearer Vehicle, the Dharma of the Hearer Vehicle is taught; not the Dharma of the Solitary Realizer Vehicle, nor the Dharma of the Great Vehicle. For individuals belonging to the Great Vehicle, the Dharma of the Great Vehicle is taught; not the Dharma of the Hearer Vehicle and the Solitary Realizer Vehicle. The sacred Dharma should be taught according to the faculties and capacities of sentient beings; Dharma should not be taught to those who do not have the faculties and capacities. One should not encourage sentient beings of the Great Vehicle to practice the Solitary Realizer Vehicle, or to practice the Hearer Vehicle. For sentient beings belonging to the Solitary Realizer Vehicle, there are times when they can be encouraged to diligently practice the conduct of the Great Vehicle; for sentient beings belonging to the Hearer Vehicle, there are also times when they can be encouraged to diligently practice the conduct of the Solitary Realizer Vehicle and the conduct of the Great Vehicle. Even for a small verse or half a verse of the sacred Dharma of the Tathagata's teachings, one should have great faith and respect; one should not slander, defame, create obstacles, or set up obstructions to it. One should perceive the Dharma teacher as being like the Buddha, the assembly listening to the Dharma as being like patients, and the Dharma being taught as being like good medicine, completely cutting off the five desires and teaching the sacred Dharma without any expectations. Sons of the lineage, these are called the ten wheels of the great armor of Dharma giving of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Any Bodhisattva Mahasattva who possesses these wheels will completely eliminate the five desires, quickly attain the Samadhi called "Light of the Sun Lamp," greatly surpass all Hearers and Solitary Realizers, become a field of merit for all Hearers and Solitary Realizers, and be offered to, protected, and revered by all practitioners of the Hearer and Solitary Realizer Vehicles. Then, the Bhagavan, in order to clearly repeat these meanings, spoke in verses: The wise, practicing Dharma giving, Teach the three vehicles of Dharma according to the vessel. Other vehicles should not be taught to them.

Can do. After hearing, do not slander or denigrate it. Like a vessel, teach the excellent Dharma to those with the capacity, but not to those without. According to each person's individual inclinations, teach the corresponding Dharma to make them happy. For those who practice the Great Vehicle, do not teach the Dharma of the two vehicles. For individuals of the middle or superior level, teach the Dharma of the middle and superior levels. Listen to the Dharma with great faith and respect, and do not slander or denigrate it. Make offerings to the Dharma speaker, and generate the thought of them being like the Buddha. In order to dispel all the diseases of afflictions, encourage listening to the excellent Dharma's medicine. Abandon profit and fame from afar, and teach and explain the excellent Dharma. Son of good family, furthermore, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva possesses the great armor wheel of pure morality. If a Bodhisattva Mahasattva possesses this wheel, from the initial generation of Bodhicitta, they completely abandon the five desires, far surpassing all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, becoming a vast field of merit for all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, and are offered to, protected, and revered by all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddha vehicle practitioners. So, how is it the great armor wheel of pure morality? Son of good family, the Bodhisattva's pure morality is of two types: common and uncommon. So, how is the Bodhisattva's wheel of pure morality—the common one? That is, householders who uphold the precepts of a male or female layperson, or ordained individuals who fully uphold the Pratimoksha vows. These vows and the Pratimoksha vows are the Bodhisattva's wheel of pure morality—the common one, which is common to all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. By the power of this wheel of pure morality, the Bodhisattva cannot cut off the afflictions of all sentient beings, or dispel wrong views, or liberate them from karmic obscurations and samsara, therefore it is called the great armor wheel.
