Sixth, The Chapter on the Characteristics of the Field of Merit. Sixth, The Chapter on the Characteristics of the Field of Merit. Furthermore, sons of good family, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva possesses ten aspects of the great armor-wheel of material giving. Whichever Bodhisattva-Mahasattva possesses this wheel, from the initial generation of the mind of enlightenment, completely abandoning the five desires, and greatly surpassing all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, becomes a great field of merit for all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, and all practitioners of the Shravaka and Pratyekabuddha vehicles will make offerings, protect, and venerate. What are the ten? They are as follows: When giving various kinds of food, drink, clothing, precious ornaments, yaks, horses, chariots, limbs of the body, feet, hands, ears, noses, heads, eyes, legs, brains, skin, bones, flesh, blood, land, power, sons, wives, male servants, female servants, houses, fields, farms, and so on, one does not consider one's own body and life, and does not generate the mind of giving for the sake of one's own desire for happiness in this world and beyond. Instead, one generates the mind of giving in order to generate the sprouts of great love and great compassion for all sentient beings. One generates the mind of giving in order to generate skillful means and supreme wisdom. One generates the mind of giving for the sake of benefiting all sentient beings and for the sake of accomplishing happiness. One generates the mind of giving in order to eliminate the suffering of all sentient beings. One gives with a mind that is free from the thought of surpassing others, a mind that is free from arrogance, a mind that is free from jealousy, and a mind that is free from stinginess and cowardice. Whether the object of giving is large or small, even if one makes a very small offering, such as a mouthful of food, one generates the mind of giving without expecting a fully ripened result. One generates the mind of giving without expecting the fruit of the Shravaka vehicle. A Pratyekabuddha

Without expecting worldly results, one generates the mind of giving. Whatever the object of giving, whether it is large or small, even if it is as small as offering a single mouthful of food, one dedicates it to the wisdom of all-knowing and generates the mind of giving. Son of good family, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva possesses these ten wheels of the great armor of tangible giving, then at the very beginning of generating the mind, in order to completely eliminate the five desires, they will far surpass all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, become a great field of merit for all the merit of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, be worshipped and revered by all vehicles of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, and be completely protected. Why is that? Because Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas generate the mind of giving without love and great compassion, it is to abandon their own poverty, to liberate themselves from suffering, to obtain happiness for themselves, and to liberate themselves from sorrow that they give, not for the sake of all sentient beings. If a Bodhisattva Mahasattva gives, it is with the mind of love and great compassion, abandoning the poverty of all sentient beings, liberating all sentient beings from suffering, causing all sentient beings to obtain happiness, and giving for the sake of liberating all sentient beings from sorrow, not practicing giving merely for oneself. Therefore, they will far surpass all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, become a great field of merit for all the merit of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, be worshipped and revered by all vehicles of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, and be completely protected. When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Paramita of tangible giving, they do not become attached to the best of the five desires, but give all the possessions of happiness that they possess to all sentient beings, with the mind of completely gathering all sentient beings, and the patience of not caring about all their own sufferings.

One gives alms while abiding in the mind to pacify the suffering of the mind and all sentient beings, and the mind to give happiness to all sentient beings, and the mind to liberate all sentient beings from sorrow. Therefore, it far surpasses all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, becomes a great field of merit for all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, and is worshiped, respected, and protected by all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddha vehicle practitioners. Son of good family, if one is not attached to the five desires and gives alms with love and great compassion, he is called a Bodhisattva Mahasattva. It is called the true field of merit for all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. If one does not abandon the five worldly desires, and gives alms without love and great compassion, even if the objects of alms are immeasurable, countless, and inconceivable, he cannot be called a Bodhisattva Mahasattva. It is also not the true field of merit for Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, because this alms is not sealed by the handprint of the noble ones. Therefore, one should abandon the five worldly desires and give alms with love and great compassion. If one does not abandon the five worldly desires, and gives alms without love and great compassion, he cannot be called a Bodhisattva, nor is it a true field of merit. Son of good family, if one gives alms because of attachment to the five desires, even a small part of the suffering of one's own body will not be pacified, let alone eliminate the immeasurable suffering of all sentient beings? Then, the Bhagavan, in order to clarify these meanings, spoke in verses: Possessing the wheel of giving material things, the wise one, with pure intention, abandoning the five desires, benefits and brings happiness to all sentient beings. For the sake of the happiness of all sentient beings, not for the sake of expecting the ripening fruit. Even if the object of alms is small, it will become a true field of merit. Even if many objects of alms are given, if one abides in the five desires, it is not sealed by the handprint of the noble ones, it is uncertain.
