Devadatta is a being who goes to hell. Alas, Devadatta has not given, nor has he done. He lives by the grace of the Blessed One, yet digs at the root of the Blessed One. Alas, Devadatta is certain of sin. Devadatta's retinue is on the side of the demons, so they have gone forth in the presence of the Blessed One, yet they think of destroying the Blessed One. Devadatta's retinue are all merely wearing robes. Devadatta's retinue live by evil means and are the beginning of famine. Blessed One, you are said to be all-knowing. You are said to be the one who teaches the Dharma that has fruit. You are said to be famous for having a completely pure lineage, so even such a wicked person as Devadatta has been allowed to go forth? Blessed One, out of compassion for all beings, please explain your intention in order to dispel the doubts and uncertainties of all beings. You are of a lineage that is without stain and completely pure, so Blessed One, Tathagata, please explain the great being. Then, at that time, by the power of the Buddha, Great Cloud Heart said this to the teacher, the prophesying Brahmin Kaundinya: Great Brahmin, well done, well done! Great Brahmin, it is good that you have asked the Tathagata, for the benefit of all beings, about the king who asks about the realm of all the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Great Brahmin, listen to me, and I will explain by the power of the Tathagata and the way we enter the realm. Brahmin, from now on, do not say such things, but think with one mind!
