Reverently attending to and associating with them, engaging in conduct and enjoyment, residing comfortably in monasteries, temples, or walking paths. Reading and reciting the Hearer Vehicle, contemplating and comprehending, and also causing others to read, causing them to recite, causing them to fully train, then the arising of the root of virtue of holding the Hearer Vehicle becomes dull, drawing back and averting from the path of unsurpassed wisdom. The root of virtue arising from the cultivation of the Bodhi-mind of that Bodhisattva, the faculty of wisdom, the eye of wisdom, is also dulled and diminished by the arising and manifestation of the root of virtue of holding and upholding the Hearer Vehicle. Mañjuśrī, for example, there is a great tree with a height of a thousand yojanas, and it is carried by the great ocean. Yakshas dwelling in the sky pull it out and avert it from the path of the great ocean. Then, a five-thousand-yojana iron anchor is attached to it. Mañjuśrī, what do you think? Will that great tree still go to the great ocean? Or can it be used to liberate sentient beings? Mañjuśrī replied: "Bhagavan, it is not so." The Bhagavan said: "Mañjuśrī, similarly, the great tree of wisdom arising from the cultivation of the Bodhi-mind of that Bodhisattva is also pulled out and averted from the ocean of omniscient wisdom by the arising and manifestation of the root of virtue of holding the Hearer Vehicle. It will not go to the ocean of omniscient wisdom, nor can it liberate sentient beings from the ocean of samsara. Mañjuśrī, this should be understood as the Bodhisattva being like an elephant pulling a cart. Mañjuśrī, how should one understand the Bodhisattva as moving like the sun and the moon? Mañjuśrī, for example, if someone wants to transcend those realms, and there his
