Like the going of an elephant cart, like the going of the moon and sun, like the going by the magical power of the Shravakas, and like the going by the magical power of the Tathagatas. Manjushri, these five are the going of the Bodhisattvas. Manjushri, among them, two Bodhisattvas are those who are not certain to attain Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment. Three Bodhisattvas are those who are certain to attain Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment. Manjushri asked: World Honored One, who are those Bodhisattvas who are not certain to attain Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment, who retreat from the path of Unsurpassed Wisdom? The World Honored One replied: Manjushri, Bodhisattvas are like the going of an animal cart, and like the going of an elephant cart. Manjushri, these two Bodhisattvas are not certain to attain Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment, and they retreat from the path of Unsurpassed Wisdom. Manjushri, Bodhisattvas are like the goers of the moon and sun, Bodhisattvas are like the goers by the magical power of the Shravakas, and Bodhisattvas are like the goers by the magical power of the Tathagatas. These three are certain to attain Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment, and they do not retreat from the path of Unsurpassed Wisdom. Manjushri, how should one know that a Bodhisattva is like the goer of an animal cart? Manjushri, for example, someone wants to transcend worlds as numerous as the dust particles of five hundred Buddha fields, and there he has his affairs, great affairs, benefits, great benefits, great needs, and extremely great needs, and then he thinks: What kind of vehicle should I use to transcend those worlds? He also thinks: It would be better for me to ride an animal cart to transcend those worlds, it is certain. Manjushri, that person rides an animal cart and enters that path, and after a long time,

In the Perfection of Wisdom, it says: If a great wind wheel blows from there in the opposite direction, blowing a person back eighty yojanas, Manjushri, what do you think, could that person, in one kalpa, or a hundred kalpas, or a thousand kalpas, or a hundred thousand million kalpas, or unspeakable and unspeakable kalpas, pass through those world realms? Could he even pass through one world realm? Manjushri replied: World Honored One, that is impossible. World Honored One, that is not possible. Just as a person driving a cart of livestock, in one kalpa, or a hundred kalpas, or a thousand kalpas, or a hundred thousand million kalpas, or unspeakable and unspeakable kalpas, wants to pass through one world realm, that is impossible. The World Honored One said: Manjushri, similarly, a son or daughter of good family, if they generate the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, but do not uphold or recite the Great Vehicle, but live with those of the Hearer Vehicle, draw near to, rely on, and respect those of the Hearer Vehicle, associate closely with them, act and enjoy together, and in monasteries, temples, or places for walking, their behavior is consistent with them. They recite and chant the scriptures of the Hearer Vehicle, contemplate and understand them, and even cause others to recite and understand them, then, that person, holding to the Hearer Vehicle and increasing roots of virtue, will become dull in wisdom, and will be led away and prevented from the path of unsurpassed wisdom. The power of wisdom, the eye of wisdom, born from the cultivation of the Bodhi mind of that Bodhisattva, will also become dull and decline because he holds and upholds the Hearer Vehicle and increases roots of virtue. Manjushri, for example, if a person closes his eyes due to an eye disease, and for the sake of being able to open and close his eyes, he undergoes treatment for a month. After a month, when he is able to open and close his eyes, his enemy or an unfriendly person uses something called pippali...

Just as filling the eyes with a handful of ashes blinds them, so too, Manjushri, the power of wisdom, the eye of wisdom, that arises from the Bodhisattva's cultivation of the mind of enlightenment, is dulled and harmed by those who hold and maintain the Hearer's Vehicle and manifest the generation of roots of virtue. Manjushri, it should be known that this Bodhisattva is like one who travels by an animal-drawn cart. Manjushri, how should it be known that a Bodhisattva is like one who travels by an elephant-drawn cart? Manjushri, for example, someone wants to transcend those world realms, and there are their affairs, great affairs, matters, great matters, important purposes, and extremely important purposes. They think to themselves: What kind of vehicle should I ride to transcend those world realms? They consider this: I must ride an elephant-drawn cart with eight limbs to undoubtedly transcend those world realms. Manjushri, that person rides an elephant-drawn cart with eight limbs and embarks on that path. When they have traveled two thousand yojanas in a hundred years, they are blown back and turned around by a great wheel of wind. Manjushri, what do you think? Can that person riding an elephant-drawn cart transcend even one world realm in one kalpa, a hundred kalpas, a thousand kalpas, a hundred thousand kotis of kalpas, or unspeakable as unspeakable kalpas? Manjushri replied: Bhagavan, that is not possible. Bhagavan, that is not possible, because that person seeking an elephant-drawn cart cannot transcend even one world realm in one kalpa, a hundred kalpas, a thousand kalpas, a hundred thousand kotis of kalpas, or unspeakable as unspeakable kalpas. The Bhagavan said: Manjushri, similarly, any son or daughter of good family who generates the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, but dwells together with those of the Hearer's Vehicle, and associates with those of the Hearer's Vehicle,
