Since there is no taking and no discarding, the nature of having no taking and no discarding is itself having no taking and no discarding. Knowing that the nature of taking and discarding is without taking and without discarding means that all dharmas are without taking and without discarding. Manjushri, these five attainments of breathing are what bodhisattvas use to purify the first ground. Manjushri, there are also five attainments of breathing that bodhisattvas use to purify the first ground. What are the five? They are: I abide in the knowledge that "I am inseparable from the conditioned, which is the unconditioned," and I also place others in the knowledge that "the conditioned is inseparable from the unconditioned." This is the attainment of breathing. Among them, being inseparable from the conditioned, which is the unconditioned, is the nature of the conditioned. Why? Because the unconditioned is not other than the nature of the conditioned. Since there is no other unconditioned apart from the nature of the conditioned, the nature of the conditioned is itself the unconditioned. Knowing that the nature of the conditioned is the unconditioned means that all dharmas are unconditioned. I abide in the knowledge that "I am inseparable from the existent, which is the non-existent," and I also place others in the knowledge that "the existent is inseparable from the non-existent." This is the attainment of breathing. Among them, being inseparable from the existent, which is the non-existent, is the nature of the existent. Why? Because the non-existent is not other than the nature of the existent. Since there is no other non-existent apart from the nature of the existent, the nature of the existent is itself the non-existent. Knowing that the nature of the existent is the non-existent means that all dharmas are non-existent. I abide in the knowledge that "I am inseparable from the abiding place, which is the non-abiding place," and I also place others in the knowledge that "the abiding place is inseparable from the non-abiding place." This is the attainment of breathing. Among them, being inseparable from the abiding place, which is the non-abiding place, is the nature of the abiding place. Why? Because the non-abiding place is not other than the nature of the abiding place. Since there is no other non-abiding place apart from the nature of the abiding place, the nature of the abiding place is itself the non-abiding place. Knowing that the nature of the abiding place is the non-abiding place means that

All dharmas are without a place. I abide in knowing the absence of an object, inseparable from the object, and I also establish other beings in knowing the absence of an object, inseparable from the object, and thus one will obtain the finding of breathing. Therein, the absence of an object, inseparable from the object, is the very nature of the object. Why is that? Because the absence of an object is not other than the nature of the object, because there is no other absence of an object apart from the nature of the object, therefore the very nature of the object is the absence of an object. Knowing the absence of an object in the nature of the object, thereby all dharmas are without an object. I abide in knowing the absence of direction, inseparable from direction, and I also establish other beings in knowing the absence of direction, inseparable from direction, and thus one will obtain the finding of breathing. Therein, the absence of direction, inseparable from direction, is the very nature of direction. Why is that? Because the absence of direction is not other than the nature of direction, because there is no other absence of direction apart from the nature of direction, therefore the very nature of direction is the absence of direction. Knowing the absence of direction in the nature of direction, thereby all dharmas are without direction. Manjushri, these five findings of breathing will completely purify the first ground of the Bodhisattvas. Manjushri, there are also five other findings of breathing that will completely purify the first ground of the Bodhisattvas. What are the five? For example: I abide in knowing the absence of characteristics, inseparable from characteristics, and I also establish other beings in knowing the absence of characteristics, inseparable from characteristics, and thus one will obtain the finding of breathing. Therein, the absence of characteristics, inseparable from characteristics, is the very nature of characteristics. Why is that? Because the absence of characteristics is not other than the nature of characteristics, because there is no other absence of characteristics apart from the nature of characteristics, therefore the very nature of characteristics is the absence of characteristics. Knowing the absence of characteristics in the nature of characteristics, thereby all dharmas are without characteristics. I abide in knowing the absence of things, inseparable from things, and I also establish other beings in knowing the absence of things, inseparable from things.
