Innumerable and immeasurable Buddhas, as well as solitary Buddhas, hundreds of millions of billions, immeasurable and innumerable, and Shravakas, hundreds of millions of billions, immeasurable and innumerable, no matter how Bodhisattvas make offerings, until that time, they will not generate the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Otherwise, later, when the roots of virtue are completely gathered, only after that will they generate the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Then, at that time, the Bhagavan spoke these verses: Initially, I saw the true meaning, the great fame crossed to the other shore, the supreme among humans, Buddhas, hundreds of millions of billions, respectfully make offerings to the countless ones. Initially, even though I worship the sources of qualities, I am the wise one, the best of those who know all dharmas, wishing to become a stupa of the world, a Buddha, even for so long, I do not generate this mind. Even to those solitary Buddhas, countless in number, I generate respect and make offerings, wishing to become a fully enlightened Buddha who tames the untamed, even for so long, I do not generate this mind. Even having generated vast respect, I also worship countless ones who have attained freedom, wishing to be like the supreme among humans, like an ocean of wisdom, even for so long, I do not generate this mind. Having seen the form of those who see the true meaning, the force of joy is vast and inconceivable, wishing the wise one to become a fully enlightened Buddha who tames the untamed, even for so long, I do not generate this mind. When they accumulate vast merit, when they meditate on the truth of body and mind, wishing to become the supreme guide of people, for the sake of enlightenment, I generate this mind. They, for countless hundreds of millions of eons, having served and revered, having accumulated the collection of merit, with a virtuous, gentle, and pliable mind, at that time, they also generate the mind of enlightenment, whatever root of virtue I have accumulated, with this, may I also become the one who sees all, may my aspiration not decline, may they enter into aspiration in this way. Whatever root of virtue I have accumulated, with this, may all sentient beings be liberated, whatever non-virtuous deeds I have done, may its result be unbearable.

Now I abandon (it). Having generated power and steadfast diligence, from now on, I also generate the mind for supreme enlightenment. May this mind never become discouraged or timid. May I obtain vast and immeasurable joy. The wise do not fixate on the mind, they do not fixate on enlightenment, nor do they fixate on themselves at all. If one knows that all these dharmas are empty, then one will not forget the mind of enlightenment. Having spoken thus, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Pervading Playfulness addressed the Blessed One, saying: Blessed One, for what reason is the Bodhisattva Mahasattva called Maitreya? From where did this Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya obtain this name? Having spoken thus, the Blessed One addressed the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Pervading Playfulness, saying: Son of good family, in the past, in a time long ago, immeasurable kalpas ago, there appeared in the world a Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Well-Gone, Knower of the World, Supreme Guide of beings to be tamed, unsurpassed, Teacher of gods and humans, Buddha, Blessed One, named Jewel Umbrella. Son of good family, as soon as that Tathagata Jewel Umbrella was born, he took seven steps, and the gods of the Pure Abode held umbrellas of seven jewels in the sky above. That jewel umbrella also illuminated all of the three-thousand great-thousand world realms. Then the gods exclaimed: How wonderful! This one will become the Tathagata Jewel Umbrella. Therefore, that Tathagata's name became Jewel Umbrella. At that time, in the teachings of that Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One Jewel Umbrella, there was a monk named Steadfast Intelligence, who had gone forth from the merchant caste. Son of good family, that monk Steadfast Intelligence went for alms. At that time, in the teachings of that Tathagata Jewel Umbrella,

When it descended, there were eighty-four thousand villages in that Jambudvipa. There were eighty-four thousand cities. There were eighty-four thousand towns. There were eighty-four thousand regions. There were eighty-four thousand marketplaces. The monk Wise and Steadfast also wandered for alms in all those villages, cities, towns, regions, and marketplaces. He thought to himself: "Until I have placed a hundred beings in the five precepts, I will not eat food." Son of good family, in this way, after the monk Wise and Steadfast had made such a vow, wherever he wandered for alms in villages, cities, towns, regions, or marketplaces, he would not eat food until he had placed a hundred beings in the five precepts. Son of good family, there were times when the monk Wise and Steadfast placed a hundred beings in the five precepts in one day, and there were such times and occasions. There were times when he placed a hundred beings in the five precepts in two days, and there were such times and occasions. Having fasted, he would eat food on the third day. There were times when he placed a hundred beings in the five precepts in three days, and there were such times and occasions. There were times when he placed a hundred beings in the five precepts in four days, and there were such times and occasions. Son of good family, there were times when he placed a hundred beings in the five precepts in five, six, or seven days, and there were such times and occasions. Even if he fasted for seven days, his mind would not be completely discouraged because of his compassion for sentient beings, and he would eat food on the eighth day. Son of good family, in that way, the monk Wise and Steadfast, with a completely undiscouraged mind, went to those great cities for eighty-four thousand years, and having gone to the villages, cities, towns, regions, and marketplaces, he placed those sentient beings in the five precepts. Son of good family, after those eighty-four thousand years had passed, beings were born
