They saw. Then, the venerable Sharadvatiputra said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, thus the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, possess great Dharma. How so? In the countless world realms of the east, one sees countless Bodhisattvas and countless Buddhas, the Blessed Ones. Similarly, in the countless world realms of the south, west, north, below, above, and intermediate directions, one sees countless Bodhisattvas and countless Buddhas, the Blessed Ones. It is wonderful!" Then, the venerable Sharadvatiputra said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, thus the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, and the Bodhisattvas possess great Dharma. It is wonderful that those who generate the mind for unsurpassed enlightenment in the vast realm!" The Blessed One said: "Sharadvatiputra, it is so. Bodhisattvas, great beings, should thus generate a vast mind for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment." He pleaded: "Blessed One, wishing to be immutable, I shall be like a Chakravartin king. Wishing to become a god, I shall be like Indra, the lord of the gods. Wishing to fully possess longevity, I shall be like the gods who approach the realm of neither perception nor non-perception. Blessed One, similarly, wishing to become a field of giving for the world, wishing to speak extensively of the Dharma in the three-thousand great-thousand world system, wishing to become a Buddha, I shall generate the mind for omniscience." After he had thus pleaded, the Blessed One said to the venerable Sharadvatiputra: "Sharadvatiputra, it is so, it is so. Wishing to become the supreme field of giving for the world, one should generate the mind for omniscience." After he had thus spoken, the venerable Sharadvatiputra said to the Blessed One:

Thus I beseech. World-Honored One, apart from this initial generation of the mind, is there any generation of the mind of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva that is better or more extensive? The World-Honored One said: Sharadvatiputra, it is good, good that you intend to inquire of the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened One. Sharadvatiputra, the uncontaminated mind of an Arhat merely abandons the afflictions in his own continuum with the mind of abandonment. That mind is not generated for the sake of immeasurable beings. Sharadvatiputra, the mind of enlightenment is generated for the sake of immeasurable beings, not for the sake of a few beings. Sharadvatiputra, the mind of a Pratyekabuddha also merely reverses the afflictions in his own continuum, but the mind of enlightenment reverses the afflictions of immeasurable beings. Sharadvatiputra, moreover, if the mind of enlightenment is cultivated, frequented, meditated upon, and increased, then one will attain omniscience through the six perfections. Having attained the wisdom of omniscience, one will thoroughly distinguish the Hearers and the Pratyekabuddhas. Those who generate roots of virtue in this, that is, have faith in and meditate on their own enlightenment, the Buddhas, the World-Honored Ones, will prophesy to them, saying: You will become Pratyekabuddhas, and in such and such an eon, you will be born and abide among gods and humans, and attain the fruit of Pratyekabuddha. Sharadvatiputra, the Pratyekabuddhas do not prophesy to the Bodhisattvas, saying: In the future, you will become a Tathagata, an Arhat, a Perfectly Awakened One. The Hearers also do not prophesy to the Bodhisattvas. If the Hearers prophesy, they prophesy after hearing it from the Tathagata. Sharadvatiputra, even if someone establishes all beings in the state of Arhat, he does not completely grasp omniscience. Sharadvatiputra, if someone teaches and guides a Bodhisattva in the six perfections, this

Therefore, he has completely grasped omniscience. Why is that? Because, Sharadvatiputra, the Bodhi of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, does not arise from the Shravakas, but the Bodhi of the Tathagatas arises from the Bodhisattvas. In the Perfection of Giving, there are the practices of Bodhisattvas in countless worlds and the teachings of the Buddha. The sixth chapter is called "The Teachings of the Buddha." Then, the venerable Sharadvatiputra said this to the Bhagavat: "Bhagavat, how should I recognize a Bodhisattva?" The Bhagavat said: "Sharadvatiputra, any Bodhisattva who practices the six perfections, this Bodhisattva obtains the name Bodhisattva." Sharadvatiputra asked: "Bhagavat, how should I understand what you said, that from the mind without outflows, the Bodhicitta is particularly excellent? Bhagavat, how should I correctly understand as you have prophesied?" The Bhagavat said: "Sharadvatiputra, what do you think? Is the mind of a Bodhisattva with attachment, hatred, and delusion?" Sharadvatiputra replied: "Bhagavat, yes, it is with attachment, hatred, and delusion." The Bhagavat said: "Sharadvatiputra, what do you think? Is the mind of an Arhat without attachment, hatred, and delusion?" Sharadvatiputra replied: "Bhagavat, that is so, the mind of an Arhat is without attachment, hatred, and delusion." The Bhagavat said: "Sharadvatiputra, what do you think? If an Arhat, due to the exhaustion of outflows, pervades immeasurable beings with love and compassion, will those beings then be satisfied with happiness?" Sharadvatiputra replied: "Bhagavat, if an Arhat is not skilled in means, how can he pervade immeasurable beings with love? Bhagavat, like this, as long as he remains in equipoise, some beings will become happy by that love, while others will become miserable."
