Furthermore, great Bodhisattvas and others discern the characteristics of the mind realm, saying that Bodhisattvas think thus: the mind realm has no dharma whatsoever, therefore it has no definite characteristics. In the mind realm, there is no so-called mind realm, nor is there a definite realm. The so-called mind realm is like a seed cultivated in the great earth, moistened with water, warmed by the sun, and moved by the wind, then a sprout gradually grows. The sprout is not born from the seed, nor is the seed one with the sprout. When the sprout grows, the seed perishes, and the seed is not different from the sprout, nor is the sprout different from the seed. Just as there is no seed in the sprout, so is the mind realm. To generate the karma of consciousness, it is shown by the characteristic of consciousness, just as the seed is shown by the sprout, hence it is called the mind realm. Apart from the mind realm, there is no so-called mind and mind realm. Although it is unknowable, it is nominally called the mind realm. The so-called mind realm does not reside within the mind, nor does it reside outside the mind, nor does it reside between the two. Because of the causes and conditions of past karma, because it is produced by consciousness, because of the karma of the mind, because of knowing the object, because of the combination of established characteristics, because of the arising of the present object, it is called the mind realm. It is the characteristic of uncertain mind karma, and the characteristic of the combination of many causes and conditions. The mind realm arises from the combination of many, therefore it follows how sentient beings know and act. In the ultimate truth, there is no so-called mind realm. Why? Because there is no real thing. That which is unborn is the mind realm, because it is unborn. The so-called mind realm is a conventional term, but in the ultimate truth, there is definitely no mind realm. In the past, future, and present, there is no object. The realms are realized as the mind realm in the realm of no realm. Bodhisattvas and others discern the characteristics of the dharma realm, saying that in the realm of no realm, it is realized as the dharma realm. In the dharma realm, there is no object of self-nature. The realm of no certainty is the dharma realm.
