The mind of loving-kindness that abides is a defiled mind. The mind of meditation that does not definitely contemplate in the mind is a defiled mind. The son of the gods said: Manjushri, which are the minds that are without defilement? Manjushri said: Son of the gods, those minds that are equal to the sky. The son of the gods said: Manjushri, does the sky have even a little mind? Manjushri said: Son of the gods, just as the sky has no mind, so too is that mind like that. Whoever's mind is like that, that mind is equal to the sky. The son of the gods said: Manjushri, who will have faith in that state? Manjushri said: Son of the gods, it is difficult for those who strive for excellence to have faith. The son of the gods said: Manjushri, what is meant by 'excellence'? Manjushri said: Son of the gods,

Son, whatever is superior because the mind is equal to space. The son of the gods said: Manjushri, what is superior? Manjushri said: Son of the gods, to consider as permanent is superior. To consider as impermanent is superior. Likewise, to consider as happiness and suffering, lovable and unlovable, self and selfless, is superior. That which is called emptiness and that which is called person is superior. That which is called signless and that which is called wishless is superior. The dharma of illusion, dream, cataract, reflection, echo, moon in water, mirage, and emanation, which are examples, are well established. To indicate, to enter, to show, that is superior. To the extent that the dharma is established, to that extent it is superior, to consider all afflictions as faults, and to consider purification as faultless, that is superior. To see samsara as a fault, and to see nirvana as a benefit, that is superior. Son of the gods, those are the superior deeds done by those with superior pride. The son of the gods said: Manjushri, how can one be without superior pride? Manjushri said: Son of the gods, whoever realizes the realm of renunciation, accomplishes the cessation of all afflictions, and even abiding in cessation, does not think of cessation, and does not generate the thought of non-birth, and is not frightened by all sounds, and knows that the nature of all afflictions is the nature of purity, and attains the non-duality, non-acceptance, and non-rejection of all dharmas, then, son of the gods, that is without superior pride. When Manjushri, become a youth, taught this teaching, twenty-two thousand sons of the gods arose the pure Dharma eye, without dust and free from defilement, towards all dharmas. Five thousand monks, without grasping, their minds were completely liberated from the outflows. Twenty-two thousand Bodhisattvas attained tolerance of non-arising dharmas.

It became like that. Thousands upon thousands of living beings generated the mind for unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Also, a thousand lay devotees attained the pure Dharma eye, free from dust and defilement, regarding the dharmas. Among householders and renunciates, two thousand women also attained the pure Dharma eye, free from dust and defilement, regarding the dharmas. Then, the son of the gods, Supreme Intellect, said to those great Shravakas, "Venerable ones, ask Manjushri, who has become a youth, about any doubts you may have." Then, the great Elder Kashyapa said to Manjushri, who had become a youth, "Manjushri, when a bhikshu meditates on the eight liberations, what does he meditate on?" Manjushri said, "Venerable Great Kashyapa, when a bhikshu meditates on the eight liberations, he meditates on the rootless, the boundless, the placeless, the unperturbed, and the true." Great Kashyapa said, "Manjushri, based on what do you say that?" Manjushri said, "Venerable Great Kashyapa, the root is one's own body, the boundary is the clinging to self, the place is the three realms, perturbation is the afflictions, and inequality is duality. Therefore, he knows that the body is rootless, he knows that clinging to self is boundless, he knows that the three realms are placeless, he knows that the afflictions are unperturbed, and he knows that meditation is non-dual. Venerable Great Kashyapa, based on that, I say that when a bhikshu meditates on the eight liberations, he meditates on the rootless, the boundless, the placeless, the unperturbed, and the true." Shariputra said, "Manjushri, how does a Bodhisattva possess wisdom without attachment?" Manjushri said, "Venerable Shariputra, a Bodhisattva engages in all attachments, but is not stained by all attachments, and directly experiences all afflictions, but in order to fully ripen sentient beings, those afflictions...
