Singing praises to the Blessed One, they followed in the footsteps of the Blessed One's passing. Some sons of the gods rained down a rain of garments, parasols, banners, and streamers raised from their own bodies, following in the footsteps of the Blessed One's passing. The sons of the gods of the Pure Abodes, with bodies possessing the excellent and utterly peaceful celestial light that causes the sun, moon, stars, and constellations to lose their brilliance, followed in the footsteps of the Blessed One's passing. Indra, Brahma, and the guardians of the world also followed in the footsteps of the Blessed One's passing, each with their own splendor. Then, the Blessed One, surrounded by a multitude of retinues of gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, bodhisattvas, and great shravaka disciples, resided on the southern slope of the King of Snow Mountains. Then, the Blessed One spoke to the venerable great Maudgalyayana's son, saying: Maudgalyayana's son, go and invite the Naga King Anavatapta, asking him if the time for the Tathagata's arrival has come. Then, the venerable great Maudgalyayana's son, at that time, manifested himself in the sky to the height of seven tala trees, blessed his body into the form of the Garuda, the king of birds, and looked upon the abode of the Naga King Anavatapta. Then, the nagas and naga daughters residing in Anavatapta were frightened and terrified, making a "whooshing" sound, scattering in all directions, and wailing: Where did all these Garudas flying in our abode come from? Then, the Naga King Anavatapta said to those nagas and naga daughters with his right hand: Do not fear, do not fear. This is the venerable Maudgalyayana's son's magical transformation. Having said this, he relaxed his breath and settled down. Settling down, utterly settling down. Then, the venerable great Maudgalyayana's son, urged on, went forth. Then, the Naga King Anavatapta, together with his sons, wives, relatives, and retinue, with all the flowers, powders, incense, unguents, garments, parasols, banners, and

Taking banners, cymbals, and waist drums, they went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, they made various offerings to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, surrounded by gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, bodhisattvas, and many great shravakas, went to the courtyard of the retinue of the Naga King Anavatapta. Having arrived, he sat in the lotus posture on the lion throne as it was arranged. All the retinue also sat on their respective seats as appropriate. Then, the Naga King Anavatapta, knowing that the Blessed One was seated, personally offered the Blessed One a variety of excellent foods, including edibles, beverages, and delicacies that were beyond human capabilities, had the flavor of the gods, and possessed a hundred tastes, satisfying him completely. Knowing that the Blessed One was satisfied and had put down his bowl, he folded his hands and requested the Blessed One to teach the Dharma. Then, the Blessed One, at the time of dawn, arose from his meditation and sat down to teach the Dharma. Then, from the center of the earth to the space in between, it was completely filled with gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, humans, and non-humans for a thousand yojanas in all directions. Then, the Naga King Anavatapta said this to the Blessed One: "Tathagata, from this assembly, those beings who have not yet generated the mind of enlightenment will generate the mind of enlightenment; those who have generated the mind of enlightenment will become non-retreaters; those beings who are afraid of samsara will become neither learners nor non-learners; they will become learners and non-learners; those beings who are manifestly inclined towards samsara will develop renunciation; this retinue of nagas and yakshas will be separated from the lower realms and will be born in the vast good realms; those bodhisattvas who have faith in the profound Dharma will purify their minds and thoughts; whether the Tathagata remains or has passed into complete nirvana, we will uphold the sacred Dharma."
