Being mindful and complete in that direction and that place, and without mental wandering, one should remember the Tathagata in order to attain the sight of the Buddha. Thus, that Bodhisattva will be able to see the Tathagata Vairurya residing in an excellent body. Good Guardian, for example, a monk who meditates on ugliness sees in front of him various forms of bloated corpses, or sees various forms of bluish corpses, or sees various forms of festering corpses, or sees various forms of red corpses, or sees various forms of corpses eaten by worms, or sees flesh scattered, or sees no flesh and blood, or sees white, or sees a color like a conch shell, or sees a skeleton in front of him, from various bluish colors to the skeleton, those things did not come from anywhere, nor did they go anywhere. They were not made by anyone, nor were they stopped by anyone. Good Guardian, however, by the power of that monk's one-pointed mind, he sees a skeleton sitting in front of him. Good Guardian, similarly, Bodhisattvas who are embraced by the Buddhas and abide in this samadhi, in whatever direction and place the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly complete Buddha resides, in that direction and that place, they contemplate in order to attain the sight of the Buddha. Having contemplated in that direction and that place, they see those Tathagatas, Arhats, perfectly complete Buddhas in that direction and that place. Why is that? Good Guardian, for example, this attainment of seeing the Buddha is a concordant cause of this samadhi. A Bodhisattva who abides in this samadhi, by the power of the Buddhas, and by the power of the roots of virtue generated by himself, and for the sake of attaining samadhi, these three gather and combine, and he sees the Tathagatas and they become visible. Good Guardian, for example, if there is any woman or man who has the nature of washing their hair and adorning themselves, and they have a vessel containing sesame oil, or a vessel containing water, or a well-wiped mirror mandala, or a ground smeared with indigo, and thinking to see themselves, they see their own form in it. Good Guardian, what do you think of that? A vessel containing sesame oil, or a vessel containing water, or

Or, in the center of a completely wiped clean mirror, or on a ground smeared with lapis lazuli, the image of a male or female that appears, did that male or female enter into it, or enter inside? Good Protector asked: Venerable Lord, although there is not, but Venerable Lord, there is no oil and water, nor a muddy field, or the center of the mirror has been well wiped clean, or the vast ground smeared with lapis lazuli has been purified, for this reason, the image is in front, water and oil, mirror and vast ground, did the body of a male or female arise from it? From nowhere, to nowhere, from nowhere born, to nowhere ceased. The Blessed One said: Good Protector, good, good! Good Protector, you are also good! Good Protector, it is so, just as it is said, because the forms are very pure, the images appear. Similarly, the Bodhisattva, by greatly meditating on this samadhi, sees those Tathagatas with little effort. Having seen, he asks, and having asked, he rejoices by being prophesied. He thinks: Where did these Tathagatas come from? Where did I go? He then thoroughly knows that those Tathagatas did not come from anywhere. Thoroughly understanding that my body did not go anywhere either. He thinks: These three realms are only mind. Why is that? Like this, however I discriminate, so it appears. The mind is not inside, nor outside, nor can it be found in between, elsewhere, it arises dependent on the object. Whatever arises dependently, that is without substance. Whatever is without substance, that is unborn. Whatever is unborn, that is without object. Whatever is without object, that is emptiness of self-nature. Whatever is emptiness of self-nature, that is unnameable. Whatever is unnameable, that cannot be seen, cannot be discerned, cannot be clung to, cannot be indicated, cannot be exhausted, nor can it be established. Then, at that time, the Blessed One

These verses were spoken. The mind makes one a Buddha, and one can also see with the mind itself. The mind itself is my Buddha, the mind itself is the Thus-Gone One. The mind itself is my body, the Buddha is seen by the mind. The mind itself is my enlightenment, the mind itself is without self-nature. The mind does not know the mind, the mind does not see the mind. In the mind, consciousness is unknowing. In the mind, unknowingness is the passing beyond sorrow. These dharmas have no essence. All arise from arrogance. Whatever is arrogant from emptiness, that arrogance is empty here. This is the chapter on concentration, asked by Bhadrapala, the third chapter. Bhadrapala, the wisdom of the bodhisattva who abides in this concentration is like that. Bhadrapala, if one possesses four qualities, a bodhisattva mahasattva will obtain this concentration in which the present Buddha dwells manifestly. What are the four? Namely: faith that cannot be stolen, exertion that does not turn back, wisdom that does not rely on others, and serving and honoring virtuous friends. Bhadrapala, if one possesses these four qualities, a bodhisattva mahasattva will obtain this concentration of a bodhisattva in which the present Buddha dwells manifestly. Bhadrapala, if one possesses another four qualities, a bodhisattva mahasattva will obtain this concentration. What are the four? Namely: for three months, even if a musical instrument is struck, one does not generate a sense of self; for three months, even if a musical instrument is struck, one is not drowsy and is not overcome by sleep; except for defecating and urinating, for three months one engages in exertion, walking and not sitting on the ground; and while extensively giving the Dharma to others, one does not expect to obtain gain, respect, and verses. Bhadrapala, if one possesses these four qualities, a bodhisattva mahasattva will obtain this concentration. Bhadrapala, if one possesses another four qualities, a bodhisattva mahasattva will obtain this concentration. What are the four? Namely:
