If one abides and perseveres, one will attain samadhi and wisdom that transcend the world. Ananda, as you asked, after the Tathagata's nirvana, what does he abide in and rely on? Ananda, one should abide in the four mindfulnesses, and abide with a mind adorned. Contemplate the body in the body, and realize it to be like the sky; this is called contemplating the body in the body mindfulness. Contemplate feelings in feelings, and realize that feelings do not exist externally, nor internally, nor in between the two; this is called contemplating feelings in feelings mindfulness. Contemplate the mind in the mind, and realize that the mind is merely a name, and is also separate from the name; this is called contemplating the mind in the mind mindfulness. Contemplate dharmas in dharmas, and do not cling to virtuous dharmas, nor cling to non-virtuous dharmas; this is called contemplating dharmas in dharmas mindfulness. Ananda, as you asked, after the Tathagata's nirvana, when collecting the Dharma treasury, how should the beginning of all sutras be established? Ananda, after the Tathagata's nirvana, when collecting the Dharma treasury, the beginning of all sutras should be established as follows: Thus have I heard, at one time, the Bhagavan was dwelling in a certain place, together with the fourfold assembly, and spoke this sutra. At that time, Ananda again asked the Bhagavan: Whether the Buddha is living in the world or has passed into nirvana, if a donor offers gold, silver, the seven precious jewels, and many useful items to the Tathagata with faith, how should it be given to whom? The Bhagavan told Ananda: If the Buddha is manifestly living, then everything offered to the Buddha should be given to the Sangha. If the Buddha has passed into nirvana, then everything dedicated and offered to the Buddha by a faithful donor should be used to make Buddha images, Buddha robes, seven precious banners and umbrellas, and to buy butter and precious flowers to offer to the Buddha. Apart from offering to the Buddha,

This place must not be used for other purposes. If it is used for other purposes, it is stealing the Buddha's property. Ananda further inquired: World Honored One, when the Buddha is alive, if a person offers gold, silver, the seven precious jewels, mansions, sons, wives, servants, clothes, food, and all the implements of comfort, and prostrates with reverence and makes offerings; and after the Tathagata has passed into Nirvana, if a person offers gold, silver, the seven precious jewels, sons, wives, servants, clothes, food, and all the implements of comfort to the image of the Tathagata, and with faithful devotion prostrates and makes offerings with reverence, World Honored One, in this way, which of these two people who make offerings with faithful devotion obtains more merit? The World Honored One said to Ananda: If these two people make offerings with the same faithful devotion, there is no difference in the merit obtained. Why is that? Because although the Buddha has passed into Nirvana, the Dharmakaya is eternal, so if one makes offerings with faithful devotion, the merit obtained is the same, there is no difference. Ananda further inquired: World Honored One, when the Buddha is manifestly present, if a person makes offerings with faithful devotion, in the same way as mentioned above, with reverence; and after the Buddha has passed into Nirvana, if a person makes offerings with faithful devotion, in the same way as mentioned above, with reverence to the complete relics of the Buddha, World Honored One, which of these two people obtains more merit? The World Honored One said to Ananda: The merit of these two people is equal, there is no difference. Because the merit is immeasurable, boundless, and vast, the merit will not be exhausted until the end of suffering is reached. Ananda further inquired: World Honored One, when the Buddha is manifestly present, if a person makes offerings to the Tathagata with faithful devotion, using all the offering items mentioned above; and after the Buddha has passed into Nirvana, if a person with faithful devotion, with reverence, to the Tathagata's

If one makes offerings to half of the Buddha's relics, Blessed One, which of these two people will gain more merit? The Blessed One said to Ananda: If these two people make offerings with a mind of devotion, there is no difference in merit, for the accumulation of merit is immeasurable and boundless. Ananda, if a person, with a mind of devotion, offers to one-fourth, one-eighth, one-sixteenth, one-hundredth, one-thousandth, one-ten-thousandth, or one part of the sands of the Ganges River of the Tathagata's relics, even a tiny mustard seed-sized portion, with reverence and respect, making offerings and praises, or if one makes offerings with reverence to the Buddha who is present, the merit of these two people is entirely equal without difference, it is immeasurable and boundless. Ananda, whether the Buddha is present or has passed into nirvana, whoever, with a mind of devotion, prostrates with reverence, taking refuge, honoring, and praising, the merit gained by these two people is not twofold, it should be understood as without difference. The Blessed One said to Ananda and the many attendants: After I pass into nirvana, whether in the heavens or in the human world, if beings obtain my relics and, with sorrow and joy, prostrate with reverence and make offerings with a mind of devotion, they will gain immeasurable and boundless merit. Ananda, whoever sees the relics of the Tathagata, sees the Buddha. Seeing the Buddha, he sees the Dharma. Seeing the Dharma, he sees the Sangha. Seeing the Sangha, he sees Nirvana. Ananda, therefore, the Three Jewels are constant, abiding, unchanging, and immutable, and should be understood as becoming the protector and refuge for all sentient beings. Ananda reported to the Blessed One: Blessed One, after you have completely passed into nirvana, what kind of rituals should we use to treat the Tathagata's body so that we can obtain the relics and make offerings with devotion? The Blessed One said to Ananda: After I pass into nirvana, your kin
