After the Passing Away of the departed, when collecting the Dharma treasures, it was said, 'Please inquire as to what the beginning of all the Sutras should be called.' At that time, in Ananda's dream, as if unhindered, he heard someone say, 'Please ask the four requests.' Having awakened, he presented these four requests to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said to Ananda, 'Why are you so unhappy and so sorrowful? The Buddha has accomplished all the deeds of taming beings. According to the Dharma nature, it is thus that one passes away.' 'Well done! Well done! Ananda, these four requests that you have made are the last requests, and they will bring benefit and happiness to all the world. Therefore, listen well and keep them well in mind, it is thus.' Ananda replied, 'Blessed One.' And then listened again to the Blessed One's teachings. The Blessed One said to Ananda, 'As you ask, after the Buddha's Passing Away, how will the group of six monks, the greedy ones, the evildoers, and the destroyers of families live together and abide in the Dharma?' Ananda, the monks who are greedy and naturally unruly will, after my Passing Away, naturally become tame and steadfast, and they will also abandon their evil thoughts. Ananda, my brother Ananda, although he is greedy and unruly, the Tathagata has skillfully taught and tamed him, and according to his faculties and wisdom, he has explained the twelve links of dependent origination. That is to say, with ignorance as the condition, there is action; with action as the condition, there is consciousness, and so on, up to old age and death, repeated sorrow and lamentation, all of which are manifestations of ignorance and greed. From the suffering of action, the three realms are filled, and one revolves in the six realms, the root of great suffering is ignorance. Therefore, by examining the naturally pure nature with wisdom, one can completely cut off the fault of existence—ignorance. When the root is cut off, ignorance ceases. When ignorance ceases, action ceases, and so on, up to old age and death, repeated sorrow and lamentation also cease. Thus, when practicing correctly, the mind becomes stable and enters into Samadhi. By the power of Samadhi, one can...

The first dhyana is attained. Then, gradually, the four dhyanas are also attained, and by diligently applying oneself in this way with a mind of perfect mindfulness, the supreme fruit is also naturally attained, and the suffering of the three realms will be completely abandoned. Ananda, at that time, the monk Kundgawo (ཀུན་དགའ་བོ།) with such a pure mind, diligently striving as I have taught, will soon attain the fruit of an Arhat. Ananda, after my parinirvana, you should teach the six groups and those with desires as I have taught. Those monks, with pure minds, relying on this perfectly pure holy Dharma, will soon attain the supreme fruit. Ananda, therefore, from ignorance arises the great tree of samsara in the three realms. Carried by the wind of desire, suffering day and night for a long time, revolving on the pillar of dark samsara, with the six consciousnesses as branches, with evil discrimination as roots, with the waves of ignorance, and with mind and consciousness like slaves wandering in the six objects, planting the seeds of suffering without being able to turn back. Like a king, having great power, therefore ignorance is like a lord, beings are constantly revolving in samsara without realizing that they are suppressed in an instant. Ananda, all beings, under the power of this ignorance, enter into the afflictions of desire, suppressed by the view of self, the eighty-four thousand afflictions, like lords, use the body, and even if the body is destroyed, they will not be free. Ananda, when the suffering of ignorance ceases and the three realms are exhausted, it is therefore called transcendence of the world. Ananda, whoever ultimately realizes that the twelve links of dependent origination are without self and enters into the realm of perfect purity, he will completely abandon the great fire of the three realms. Ananda, the Tathagata speaks truthfully, you should carefully remember this truthful speech that has been told to you. Ananda, as you asked, if the Buddha passes into nirvana and does not remain in the world, who will be the teacher? Ananda, discipline is your great teacher.
