Chapter Fourteen: Establishing the Dharma. Chapter Fourteen: Establishing the Dharma. At that time, the Blessed One said to Ananda and the many assembled: After my nirvana, may you fourfold assembly strive to uphold this great nirvana of mine. I have cultivated this teaching of nirvana, which is exceedingly difficult to obtain, for immeasurable kalpas, and now I proclaim it. May you understand it thus: This teaching of the Great Nirvana is the precious vajra treasury of all Buddhas abiding in the ten directions and three times, being permanent, blissful, self, pure, and complete without decay. All Buddhas attain complete nirvana through this nirvana, reaching ultimate perfection without any remainder. All Buddhas are called nirvana because they relinquish this life. If you wish to truly repay the kindness of the Buddhas and quickly attain enlightenment, if you wish to be empowered by the Buddhas from the crown of your head and to remember correctly and never forget wherever you are born, if you wish the Buddhas of the ten directions to appear before you and protect you day and night, and if you wish all sentient beings to attain the Dharma that transcends the world, then diligently apply yourselves to this sutra of complete nirvana. The Blessed One further said to Ananda: Even before I attained complete enlightenment, I joined the teachings of the non-Buddhist Udraka Ramaputra, engaging in the practice of the four dhyanas and eight samadhis, and acted according to their teachings. After attaining complete enlightenment, I disparaged their teachings, and eventually even the most excellent among them were subdued and placed within the Buddha's teachings. The fire of the Tathagata's great wisdom burns the banner of evil views like dry leaves thrown into a great fire. Ananda, I have great affection for my relatives, the Shakya clan. After my nirvana, diligently and well expound the Dharma. Teach the true Dharma to my attendants, and do not indulge in play and heedless pleasures.

And, not to engage in dharma that is viewed with evil intentions, and if not liberated from the suffering of the three realms, to quickly liberate from it, to generate great fear towards the desires of the five degenerations, to generate the notion of being without a protector, that it is difficult to regain a human body once lost, to be cautious throughout one's life, to be completely liberated from the great demon of impermanence, to generate compassion for sentient beings, not to kill the lives of sentient beings, to give fearlessness to small creatures like ants even when young, to be born in a good world through the complete purification of bodily actions, to become free from all faults of wrongdoing through the complete purification of speech actions, not to eat meat, not to drink alcohol, to tame the serpent of the mind and rejoice on the path to enlightenment, to be very careful about actions, as the ripening of virtue and sin follows like a shadow, and the fruits of the three times will surely not be without return, do not let this life be wasted, for later regret will be of no use, proclaim this! The time for my nirvana has come, these are my teachings to you. At that time, having heard the Blessed One's teachings, Ananda's body and mind trembled and shook, he was greatly agitated, tormented by sorrow, unable to even utter a sound, and almost fainted, becoming like dead before the Tathagata. Then, without ceasing, the Blessed One cheered up Ananda, dispelled his sorrow, and said: Do not grieve so. The time for the Tathagata's nirvana has come, he is here today, but will not be here tomorrow. You should ask these four questions as I have said: After the Buddha's nirvana, how will the group of six monks who destroy the Sangha, who are pleasure-seeking and sinful, live together and act according to the Dharma? If the Tathagata were in the world, the teacher would be the Buddha, but after the Blessed One's nirvana, who will be the teacher? If the Tathagata were in the world, one would rely on the Tathagata, but after nirvana, who will one rely on? The Tathagata
