That which is called "neither characteristic nor non-characteristic" is because one is skilled in and realizes all characteristics. Therefore, it is not non-characteristic. That which is called "the Tathagata is not mind" is because it is the nature of space, therefore it is not mind. That which is called "neither non-mind nor non-non-mind" is because one possesses the mind of the ten powers of Dharma, and also knows the minds of others, therefore it is not non-mind. That which is called "the Tathagata is not conditioned" is because it is permanent, blissful, self, and completely pure, therefore it is not conditioned. That which is called "neither unconditioned nor non-unconditioned" is because there is coming, going, dwelling, and lying down. Also, complete nirvana is taught, therefore it is not non-unconditioned. That which is called "the Tathagata is not permanent" is because he has limbs, therefore he is not permanent. That which is called "not permanent" is because he has consciousness. The Dharma of permanence is without consciousness, like space. The Tathagata has consciousness, therefore he is not permanent. How is he not permanent? Because he can speak. The Dharma of permanence cannot speak, like space. The Tathagata has the ability to speak, therefore he is not permanent. Because there is lineage and clan, it is called impermanent. That which has no lineage and clan is called permanent, space is permanent, therefore it has no lineage. The Tathagata has lineage and clan, because he is of the Gautama clan, therefore he is impermanent. Because he has parents, it is called impermanent. That which has no parents is called permanent, space is permanent, therefore it has no father and mother. The Tathagata has father and mother, therefore he is impermanent. Because he has the four postures, it is called impermanent. That which has no four postures is called permanent, space is permanent, therefore it has no four postures. The Tathagata has the four postures, therefore he is impermanent. The Dharma that always abides has no place and direction. Space is permanent, therefore it has no place and direction. The Tathagata was born in the east, exists in Nairanjana, and dwells in Rajagriha, therefore he is impermanent. Therefore,

The Tathagata is not permanent. Saying it is not impermanent is because birth is completely cut off. Whatever dharma has birth is called impermanent; whatever dharma is without birth is permanent. The Tathagata is also without birth, therefore is permanent. The permanent dharma is without lineage; whatever dharma has lineage is called impermanent. The Tathagata is without birth and without lineage; because of being without birth and without lineage, therefore is permanent. The permanent dharma pervades all places, just as space pervades all places. The Tathagata is also like that, pervading all places, therefore is permanent. The impermanent dharma is said to exist in this place but not in another. The Tathagata is not like that; it cannot be said that he exists in this place but not in another, therefore he is permanent. The impermanent dharma is sometimes existent and sometimes nonexistent. The Tathagata is not like that. He is not sometimes existent and sometimes nonexistent, therefore he is permanent. The permanently abiding dharma is without name and form; space is permanent, therefore it is without name and form. The Tathagata is also like that, without name and form, therefore he is permanent. The permanently abiding dharma is without cause and effect; space is permanent, therefore it is without cause and effect. The Tathagata is also like that, without cause and effect, therefore he is permanent. The permanently abiding dharma does not belong to the three times; the Tathagata is also like that, not belonging to the three times, therefore he is permanent. Saying the Tathagata is not an illusion is because all unreal beings are completely cut off, therefore he is not an illusion. Saying that not being an illusion is also not unreal is because the Tathagata sometimes emanates countless bodies from this one body, and also makes countless bodies into one body, and walks without obstruction on mountains and rocks, and walks on water as on land, and sinks into the land as in water, and walks in the sky as on land, and smoke billows and fire blazes from his body like a great heap of fire, and he makes frightening sounds by proclaiming clouds and thunder, and sometimes
