Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas see all dharmas as having the characteristic of impermanence. Son of lineage, there is also a definite characteristic. What is definite? It is permanence, bliss, self, and purity. Where does it abide? It abides in Nirvana. Son of lineage, the fruit of stream-enterer is also indefinite. Because of this indefiniteness, one can obtain the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment in eighty kalpas. The fruit of once-returner is also indefinite. Because of this indefiniteness, one can obtain the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment in sixty kalpas. The fruit of non-returner is also indefinite. Because of this indefiniteness, one can obtain the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment in forty kalpas. The fruit of Arhat is also indefinite. Because of this indefiniteness, one can obtain the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment in twenty kalpas. The Bodhi of Pratyekabuddha is also indefinite. Because of this indefiniteness, one can obtain the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment in ten thousand kalpas. Son of lineage, now the Thus-Gone One, in this city of Kushinagar, between the twin Sala trees, reclining on a lion throne and sleeping, being close to entering Nirvana, many attendants who have not attained the fruit of Arhat, and great powerful ones, etc., generate great sorrow, and gods, humans, Asuras, Gandharvas, Garudas, Kinnaras, Mahoragas, etc., offer great offerings, and many people wrap the body with a thousand pieces of fine cloth, make a frame with the seven precious jewels, fill it with ghee, pile up various fragrant woods, and when setting it on fire, two things will not be burned. What are the two? That which touches the body itself, and the outer layer of the inside. When it is taught to divide the relics into eight parts for all sentient beings, all the attendants of the Shravakas say that the Thus-Gone One has entered Nirvana, but it should be known that the Thus-Gone One has not necessarily entered Nirvana. Why is that? The Thus-Gone One is permanent, unchanging, and unmoving. Thus.

Therefore, the Tathagata's nirvana is also uncertain. Son of good family, the Tathagata should be understood as uncertain. Thus, the Tathagata is not a deva. Why is that? Devas are of four types: worldly devas, devas by birth, completely pure devas, and devas of meaning. Worldly devas are like kings. Devas by birth are those born from the devas of the retinue of the Four Great Kings up to the devas of neither perception nor non-perception. Completely pure devas are those from stream-enterers up to solitary buddhas. Devas of meaning are those bodhisattva-mahasattvas on the tenth ground. Why are bodhisattvas on the tenth ground called devas of meaning? Because they are extremely skilled in the meaning of all dharmas. What is meaning? It is seeing all dharmas as the meaning of emptiness. Son of good family, the Tathagata is not a king, not a deva from the Four Great Kings up to neither perception nor non-perception, not a stream-enterer up to a solitary buddha, and not a bodhisattva on the tenth ground. Therefore, the Tathagata is not a deva. However, sentient beings call the Buddha the deva of devas. Therefore, the Tathagata is not a deva, nor is he a non-deva. He is not a human, nor is he a non-human. He is not a rakshasa, nor is he a non-rakshasa. He is not a hell being, an animal, or a preta, nor is he a non-hell being, a non-animal, or a non-preta. He is not a sentient being, nor is he a non-sentient being. He is not dharma, nor is he non-dharma. He is not form, nor is he non-form. He is not long, nor is he non-long. He is not short, nor is he non-short. He is not a characteristic, nor is he a non-characteristic. He is not mind, nor is he non-mind. He is not with defilements, nor is he without defilements. He is not conditioned, nor is he unconditioned. He is not permanent, nor is he impermanent. He is not illusion, nor is he non-illusion. He is not name, nor is he non-name. He is not definite, nor is he non-definite. He is not existent, nor is he non-existent. He is not non-existent, nor is he non-non-existent.

It is not existence, it is not speech, it is not non-speech, it is not Tathagata, it is not non-Tathagata, therefore, the Tathagata is uncertain. Son of lineage, why is the name of worldly deity not applied to the Tathagata? Worldly deities are the kings, the Tathagata has abandoned the position of king for a long time, for immeasurable kalpas, therefore he is not a king. The so-called non-king's non, is that the Tathagata was born in the city of Kapilavastu, in the house of King Suddhodana, therefore he is not a non-king. The so-called non-born deity, is that the Tathagata has been separated from all existences for a long time, therefore he is not a born deity. The so-called non-born deity's non, is that he descended from the Tushita heaven to Jambudvipa, therefore the Tathagata is also not a non-born deity. The so-called non-pure deity, is that the Tathagata is not a stream-enterer up to a solitary Buddha, therefore the Tathagata is not a pure deity. The so-called non-pure deity's non, is that he is not stained by the eight worldly dharmas, just as a lotus is not stained by water and dust, therefore the Tathagata is not a non-pure deity. The so-called non-meaning deity, is that the Tathagata is not a tenth-ground Bodhisattva, therefore the Tathagata is not a meaning deity. The so-called non-meaning deity's non, is that the Tathagata constantly diligently practices the eighteen emptinesses, therefore the Tathagata is not a non-meaning deity. The so-called Tathagata is not a human, is that the Tathagata has completely abandoned the existence of human for a long time, for immeasurable kalpas, therefore he is not a human. The so-called non-human's non, is that he was born in the city of Kapilavastu, therefore he is also not a non-human. The so-called Tathagata is not a Rakshasa, because he does not harm all sentient beings, therefore he is not a Rakshasa. The so-called non-Rakshasa's non, is that he transforms into the form of a Rakshasa, subduing sentient beings.
