Chapter Ten: The Chapter Asked by the Bodhisattva Sarvadarśana-samantanetra-śrīrāja. Chapter Ten: The Chapter Asked by the Bodhisattva Sarvadarśana-samantanetra-śrīrāja. The Noble Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, Volume Twenty-Nine. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva Sarvadarśana-samantanetra-śrīrāja said to the Bhagavan: "Bhagavan, how does one give alms so that it is not called the pāramitā of giving? How does one give alms so that it is not called the pāramitā of giving, and up to wisdom, how is it that it is not called the pāramitā of wisdom? How is it called the pāramitā of wisdom so that it can be established? How is it called nirvāṇa? How is it called mahāparinirvāṇa?" The Bhagavan replied: "Son of good family, when a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva diligently applies himself to the greatly expanded Mahāparinirvāṇa, he does not hear of giving, does not see giving, does not hear of the pāramitā of giving, does not see the pāramitā of giving, and up to wisdom, does not hear of wisdom, does not see wisdom, does not hear of the pāramitā of wisdom, does not see the pāramitā of wisdom, does not hear of nirvāṇa, does not see nirvāṇa, does not hear of mahāparinirvāṇa, does not see mahāparinirvāṇa. When a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva diligently applies himself to mahāparinirvāṇa, he realizes and sees the realm of dharma, the true characteristic of emptiness, nothingness, non-aggregation, the characteristic of no feeling and no understanding, realizes as it is, and the characteristic of no outflows, the characteristic of no action, the characteristic like an illusion, the characteristic like a mirage, the city of the Gandharvas, and the characteristic like the sky, all are attained. When the Bodhisattva attains such characteristics at that time, because there is no desire, hatred, and ignorance, he does not hear or see. This is the true characteristic of the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva as it is. Abiding in the true characteristic."

The giving of Bodhisattva Mahasattvas is like this, understanding that the perfection of giving is like this, from wisdom is like this, to the perfection of wisdom is like this, Nirvana is like this, and Great Nirvana is like this, to thoroughly understand. Son of good family, if giving is, but not a paramita, what is it? Seeing a beggar and then giving is called giving, but it is not a paramita. Giving oneself without a beggar is called the perfection of giving. Giving from time to time is called giving, but it is not called a paramita. Always giving is called the perfection of giving. Giving to others and then regretting it is called giving, but it is not called a paramita. Giving without regret is called the perfection of giving. Bodhisattva Mahasattvas generate four kinds of fears for wealth and possessions, such as kings, thieves, water, and fire, and giving with great joy is called the perfection of giving. If giving is given in expectation of return, it is called giving, but it is not called a paramita. Not expecting a return for giving is called the perfection of giving. If giving is given for fear, gain, fame, family affairs, racial life, birth in heaven, the five desires, arrogance, great arrogance, seeking good teachers, and expecting return, it is like doing business. Son of good family, just as people plant trees, expecting cool shade, flowers, fruits, and houses, etc., if someone gives in this way, it is called giving, but it is not a paramita. Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, striving in this way for Great Nirvana, do not see giving, the recipient, and the object of wealth as real, nor do they see time as real, nor do they see merit and non-merit as real, do not see cause, do not see condition, do not see the ripening of fruit, do not see the doer.

Not seeing giving, not seeing receiving, not seeing many, not seeing few, not seeing clean, not seeing unclean. Not disparaging the giver, the receiver, and possessions, not seeing even seeing, not seeing even not seeing, not clinging to self and other. Giving is done for the sake of the exceedingly vast Great Nirvana, the permanent Dharma, giving is done for the benefit and happiness of all sentient beings, giving is done for the sake of completely cutting off the afflictions of all sentient beings, giving is done so that all sentient beings do not see giving, receiving, and possessions as real, one should diligently strive. Son of good family, for example, if a person falls into the ocean, grasping a corpse, he will be able to escape from the ocean. If a Bodhisattva Mahasattva diligently strives for Great Nirvana, practicing giving is also the same. Son of good family, for example, if a person is imprisoned in an extremely deep and wide cesspool, there is no other place to escape from, but there is one hole for excrement and urine, and if he comes out from there, he will reach a place without obstruction. When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva diligently strives for Great Nirvana, giving is also the same. Son of good family, for example, if a noble person is frightened and has no protector, he will rely on and seek refuge in a low-caste Chandalas. When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva diligently strives for Great Nirvana, giving is also the same. Son of good family, for example, just as a sick person eats impure things in order to eliminate the suffering of illness and obtain happiness. When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva diligently strives for Great Nirvana, giving is also the same. Son of good family, for example, just as a Brahmin eats dog meat in order to save his life when rice is extremely scarce. When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva diligently strives for Great Nirvana, giving is also the same. Son of good family, in the Great Nirvana, one hears things that have not been heard for immeasurable kalpas, as well as morality and the perfection of morality, up to wisdom and the perfection of wisdom.
