Therefore, the Tathagatas comprehended and spoke of the extremely profound essence. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, of the past, as countless and limitless as the sands of the Ganges River, have inquired about these extremely profound ultimate meanings. I have never seen anyone in all the worlds, whether gods, humans, ascetics, Brahmins, demons, Brahmas, or anyone else, ask the Tathagata about these meanings. Now, you should pay close attention, listen carefully, and contemplate deeply, and I will explain it to you in detail. Son of the lineage, those who have severed their roots of virtue are not determined. If (severing the roots of virtue) were determined, then those who have severed their roots of virtue would never attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Precisely because it is undetermined, it is possible to attain it. Therefore, if the Buddha-nature is not severed, why call them those who have severed their roots of virtue? Severing the roots of virtue, son of the lineage, there are two kinds of roots of virtue: internal and external. Buddha-nature is neither internal nor external, therefore Buddha-nature is unbreakable. Again, there are two kinds: with outflows and without outflows. Buddha-nature is neither with outflows nor without outflows, therefore it is unbreakable. Again, there are two kinds: permanent and impermanent. Buddha-nature is neither permanent nor impermanent, therefore it is unbreakable. If it could be broken, then it should also be possible to regain it. If it cannot be regained, then it is called unbreakable. Whoever can be attained after being broken is called one who has severed their roots of virtue. Violating the four root vows is also undetermined. If (violating the four root vows) were determined, then those who violate the four root vows would never attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Slandering the deeply vast Sutra Pitaka is also undetermined. If (slandering the deeply vast Sutra Pitaka) were determined, then those who slander the Dharma would never attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Committing the five heinous crimes is also undetermined. If (committing the five heinous crimes) were determined, then those who commit the five heinous crimes would never attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Form and the nature of form are both undetermined. The nature of smell, taste, touch, and the nature of arising, up to ignorance, are all undetermined.

of characteristics, and between the characteristics of aggregates, elements, and sense bases, and between the twenty-five existences and the four births, and between all dharmas, everything is uncertain. Son of lineage, for example, a magician conjures up four types of armies within a large retinue: chariot armies, infantry, elephant armies, horse armies, as well as Semodo, implements for adorning the body, villages, cities, towns, mountains, forests, trees, springs, lakes, rivers, and wells. From the conjuration, among those retinues, the ignorant and unknowing, upon seeing these, grasp them all as true. But wise and intelligent ones know that it is not true, knowing that the power of illusion deceives people's eyes. Son of lineage, from ordinary beings to hearers and solitary realizers, seeing all dharmas as having definite characteristics is also similar to that. Buddhas and Bodhisattvas do not see all dharmas as having definite characteristics. Son of lineage, for example, ignorant people see a mirage in summer and think it is water. But wise and intelligent ones do not regard that mirage as truly being water, knowing that the unreal mirage deceives people's eyes, knowing that it is not truly water. All ordinary beings, hearers, and solitary realizers see all dharmas in the same way, grasping everything as being true. Buddhas and Bodhisattvas do not regard all dharmas as having definite characteristics. Son of lineage, for example, if a sound is made near a rock, an echo arises, and ignorant and foolish people, upon hearing it, grasp the sound as being true. But wise and intelligent ones know that it is not truly definite, knowing that just the characteristic of sound deceives the consciousness of the ear. Son of lineage, all ordinary beings, hearers, and solitary realizers regard all dharmas as having such definite characteristics. Bodhisattvas, however, thoroughly realize that all dharmas do not have definite characteristics, and therefore see the characteristic of impermanence, and the characteristics of emptiness, peace, and so forth, and the characteristic of no arising and no ceasing, therefore, Bodhi
