Furthermore, the Bodhisattva practices the giving of what is difficult to give. The Bodhisattva does what is difficult to do and endures what is difficult to endure. Even when giving what is difficult to give, they do not harbor the thought, "I have done this." Son of good family, for example, parents who have an only child cherish them greatly. They nourish and care for them with fine clothes and delicious food in due season, doing everything possible to prevent them from suffering. If that child develops a mind of animosity towards their parents and reviles them with harsh words, the parents, out of love, will not become angry or displeased. They will not think, "I gave them clothes and food." The Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is also like this, regarding all sentient beings as if they were their only child. If the child becomes ill, the parents also become ill, seeking medicine and doctors, striving diligently to cure the illness. Once the illness is cured, they do not think, "I cured my child's illness." The Bodhisattva is also like this. Seeing sentient beings tormented by the illness of afflictions, they teach the Dharma with a mind of loving-kindness. Through hearing the Dharma, they completely cut off all afflictions. Having cut off afflictions, they do not think, "I have cut off the afflictions of sentient beings." If they were to think in this way, they would never attain the unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment. They do not think, "I have taught the Dharma to even one sentient being and cut off their afflictions." The Bodhisattva-Mahasattva neither hates nor loves sentient beings. Why is that? Because they diligently meditate on the Samadhi of Emptiness. Having meditated on the Samadhi of Emptiness, who would the Bodhisattva hate, and towards whom would they generate love? Son of good family, for example, if a forest is burned by fire, or cut down by people, or flooded by water, towards whom does the tree in the forest express anger, and towards whom does it express joy? The Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is also like that. Towards all sentient beings, there is neither anger nor joy. Why is that? Because they meditate on the Samadhi of Emptiness. Then, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, All-Illuminating, Noble and Glorious King, said to the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, are all phenomena empty by their own nature, or are they empty through meditating on emptiness? If by their own nature...

If it is empty, then by meditating on emptiness, one can truly see emptiness. If the Bhagavan says that by meditating on emptiness, one sees emptiness, then if the nature is not empty, no matter how one meditates on emptiness, it will not become empty. The Bhagavan taught: Son of good family, all dharmas are empty by nature. Why is that? Because the nature of all dharmas is unattainable. Son of good family, the nature of form is unattainable. What is the nature of form? The so-called form is not earth, water, fire, or wind, nor is it other than earth, water, fire, or wind. It is not blue, yellow, red, or white, nor is it other than blue, yellow, red, or white. It is not existent, nor is it non-existent. Why do you say that form has a nature? Because the nature is unattainable, it is said to be emptiness. All dharmas are the same, because the characteristics are the same and continuous. When foolish and inferior people see this, they say that the nature of all dharmas is not emptiness and peace. Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, because they possess five things, see that the nature of dharmas is empty and peaceful from the beginning. Son of good family, if any renunciant or Brahmin sees that the nature of all dharmas is not emptiness, then they are not renunciants, not Brahmins, they will not attain the Perfection of Wisdom, they will not completely escape from suffering, and they will not directly see the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Know that they are the retinue of Mara. Son of good family, all dharmas are empty by nature. Bodhisattvas, by meditating on emptiness, see all dharmas as empty. Son of good family, all dharmas are impermanent by nature, therefore cessation will prevent their continued existence. If they were not impermanent, then cessation would not prevent their continued existence. Conditioned dharmas have the characteristic of arising, therefore production will cause arising, and having the characteristic of ceasing, therefore cessation will cause prevention. All dharmas have the characteristic of suffering, therefore suffering will cause suffering. Son of good family, for example, salt has the characteristic of taste.
