Even those like Shariputra and Maudgalyayana cannot be called true spiritual friends of sentient beings. Why is that? Because they give rise to causes for minds with wrong views. Son of good family, in the past when I was residing in Kapilavastu, Shariputra had two attendants. One was made to contemplate skeletons, and the other was made to practice breath control. Although many years passed, neither of them attained samadhi. Because they did not attain it, there was also no nirvana, and no undefiled dharma, so they developed wrong views. They said, "If that existed, we would have attained it. Why is that? Because we are very disciplined and uphold the teachings." At that time, I saw that those two monks were developing negative thoughts, so I called Shariputra and rebuked him, saying, "You do not teach well. Why did you confuse those two students and teach them wrong dharma? Your two students are of different castes. One is a washerman, and the other is a goldsmith. For the goldsmith, it is appropriate to teach breath control. For the washerman, it is appropriate to teach contemplation of skeletons. Because you taught incorrectly, those two people developed wrong and unwholesome thoughts." At that time, I taught those two people the dharma as it is, and after hearing it, they attained the fruit of arhatship. Therefore, I am the true spiritual friend of all sentient beings, but Shariputra and Maudgalyayana are not. If there are any sentient beings who are very heavily afflicted by disturbing emotions, if they meet me, I will cut them off by means of skillful methods. For example, my brother Nanda was very heavily afflicted with desire, and I completely cut it off by means of various very skillful methods. Angulimala was very heavily afflicted with hatred, and seeing me, his hatred subsided. King Ajatashatru was very heavily afflicted with delusion, and seeing me, his mind of delusion disappeared. The householder Yika accumulated a great mass of disturbing emotions for countless eons, and seeing me, those emotions were quickly exhausted and pacified. If evil and wicked people approach me

If you are close to me, all gods and humans will respect and serve you because of this cause and condition. The evil view of Shirikubata was very prevalent, but after seeing me, the evil view disappeared. Because of seeing me, the cause of sentient beings falling into hell is cut off, and it turns into the cause of being born in heaven. For example, one named Evil Seed Life-Taker, when approaching death, seeing me will prolong his life. For example, Kausika, his mind was defiled and disturbed, but after seeing me, his mind returned to its original state. The son of Evil Seed Gautami, named Neck, always did unwholesome deeds, but after seeing me, he abandoned those evil deeds. The two monks, Meditator and Grass-Knot, because of seeing me, even if they wavered between body and life, their vows of discipline were not lost. Therefore, the monk Joy says that only showing half of pure conduct becomes a good friend, but I do not say that, complete pure conduct is a good friend. Therefore, a Bodhisattva who cultivates the Great Nirvana is called approaching a good friend. So, how does a Bodhisattva become learned? A Bodhisattva Mahasattva, for the sake of the Great Nirvana, writes, reads, recites, distinguishes, and teaches the twelve divisions of scriptures, which is called a Bodhisattva being learned. Abandoning eleven divisions of scriptures, only upholding, reading, reciting, writing, distinguishing, and teaching the profound and vast scriptures is also called a Bodhisattva being learned. Abandoning the twelve divisions of scriptures, upholding, writing, reciting, reading, distinguishing, and teaching this supreme Great Nirvana Sutra is also called a Bodhisattva being learned. Even abandoning this sutra, upholding a four-line verse, or abandoning that verse, upholding that the Tathagata always abides, and that his nature does not change or transmigrate.

Then that Bodhisattva is also called one who is endowed with much learning. Even setting those aside, if one knows that the Tathagata never speaks the Dharma, that is also called a Bodhisattva endowed with much learning. Why is that? Because the Dharma is without inherent existence. Although the Tathagata has spoken all Dharmas, he constantly says nothing at all. That is because the Bodhisattva meditates on the Great Nirvana, so it is called being endowed with much learning. Son of good family, if a son or daughter of good family possesses these five things for the sake of the Great Nirvana, they will be able to do what is difficult to do, endure what is difficult to endure, and give away what is difficult to give away. How does a Bodhisattva do what is difficult to do? If someone hears the words, "If you eat one sesame seed, you will attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment," because they believe those words, they constantly eat one sesame seed for countless immeasurable eons. If they hear the words, "If you jump into the fire, you will attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment," for countless eons, they enter a blazing fire in the Avici hell. This is called a Bodhisattva doing what is difficult to do. How does a Bodhisattva endure what is difficult to endure? If they hear that by experiencing suffering such as being beaten and cut with hands, sticks, swords, and stones, one will attain the Great Nirvana, even if they experience those things for countless immeasurable eons, they do not consider it suffering. This is called a Bodhisattva enduring what is difficult to endure. How does a Bodhisattva give away what is difficult to give away? If they hear that by giving away lands, cities, wives, children, heads, eyes, feet, and brains to others, one will attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, for countless immeasurable eons, they give away all possessions such as lands, cities, wives, children, heads, eyes, feet, and brains.
