So it is. Son of good family, as you have said. If there is no nature of yogurt in milk, then it is not reasonable for yogurt to arise. If the seed of the banyan tree does not have the nature of five cubits, then to say that a tree of five cubits can grow is the talk of fools. Wise and intelligent people would never say such a thing. Why is that? Because there is no inherent nature. Son of good family, if there were a nature of yogurt in milk, then it would not need to rely on the power of many causes and conditions. Son of good family, if water and milk are mixed and stirred, even if left for a month, it will not turn into yogurt. If it is stained with a drop of juice from a tree called bāke'u, it will immediately turn into yogurt. If there were a nature of yogurt from the beginning, why would it need to rely on many causes and conditions? Similarly, the Buddha-nature of sentient beings will only become visible through many causes and conditions, and through many causes and conditions, it will transform into unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Whatever is attained by relying on many causes and conditions is without inherent nature. Thus, because it is without inherent nature, it transforms into unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Son of good family, therefore, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should always praise the good qualities of others and not speak of their faults. This is called an upright mind. Chapter Thirty-Five Furthermore, son of good family, what is the upright mind of a Bodhisattva? A Bodhisattva Mahasattva should always avoid committing misdeeds. If a misdeed occurs, they should immediately confess and repent to a preceptor or teacher, without concealing it. With shame and hesitation, they should rebuke themselves and vow not to repeat it in the future. They should cultivate the perception that even a minor misdeed is extremely serious. If someone asks, they should truthfully answer, "It is a misdeed." If asked, "Is the misdeed good or bad?" they should answer, "It is bad." If asked, "Is the misdeed virtuous or non-virtuous?" they should answer, "It is non-virtuous." If asked, "Is the misdeed the result of virtue or the result of non-virtue?" they should answer, "The misdeed is certainly not the result of virtue." If asked, "Who committed this misdeed?" do not say that it was committed by the Buddha, Dharma, or Sangha.

If asked, "Who did it?" the answer is, "It was not done by the Buddha, Dharma, or Sangha, but by myself." And the answer is, "It was done by the accumulation of afflictions." Therefore, because the mind is upright, one believes in the existence of Buddha-nature. Because one believes in the existence of Buddha-nature, one should not be called a heretic. Therefore, because the mind is upright, one is called a close attendant of the Buddha. Even if one takes one out of ten thousand parts of the clothes, food, bedding, and medicine offered by sentient beings, one should not say it is too much. This is called the upright mind of a Bodhisattva. So, how does a Bodhisattva uphold morality? A Bodhisattva Mahasattva does not uphold the precepts for the sake of being born in heaven, nor for the sake of destruction, and does not accept dog precepts, bird precepts, cow precepts, peacock precepts, etc. He does not break the precepts, does not damage the precepts, does not expect anything from the precepts, does not hold various precepts, and does not hold the precepts of the Shravakas. A Bodhisattva Mahasattva receives and upholds the precepts of the Bodhisattva and the Paramita of morality, and even if he has received the Bhikshu precepts, he does not give rise to pride. This is called the Bodhisattva who is endowed with the three precepts of the great complete Nirvana. So, how does a Bodhisattva attend to a virtuous friend? A Bodhisattva Mahasattva always shows sentient beings the path of virtue and does not show the path of non-virtue, and teaches that the path of non-virtue is not the fruit of virtue. Son of good family, I am the true virtuous friend of all sentient beings, and I am able to cut off all the evil views of the Brahmin Pūrana. Son of good family, if any sentient being attends to and respects me, even if there is a cause for falling into hell, he will be reborn as a god. For example, Sundara Chata and other sentient beings, who originally had the cause of falling into hell, but because they saw me, the cause of hell was purified, and they were reborn as gods with form.
