When the sun reaches noon, the sun does not think, 'I will not go to the west, but instead go to the east.' There is no such thought. The Buddha-nature is also like this; even without hearing, without upholding the precepts, without giving, without practicing austerities, without wisdom, there is no situation where one cannot attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. World Honored One, the meaning of what the Tathagata Buddha said, that in the nature of cause and effect, it is neither existent nor non-existent, is not like that. Why is that? For example, if there is no nature of curds in milk, there are no curds. If there is no nature of growing into a five-cubit-high tree in the seed of the banyan tree, it will not grow into a five-cubit-high tree. Similarly, if there is no tree of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment in the Buddha-nature, how can the tree of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment grow? Therefore, how can saying that cause and effect are neither existent nor non-existent be in accordance with reason? Then, the World Honored One praised, 'Good! Good!' Son of good family, there are two kinds of people in the world, as rare as the Udumbara flower. Which two? Those who do not commit unwholesome deeds, and those who regret the sins they have committed. Such people are very rare. There are also two kinds of people: the ungrateful and the grateful. There are also two kinds of people: those who listen to the Dharma without having heard it before, and those who do not forget what they have heard. There are also two kinds of people: those who create new things and those who repair old things. There are also two kinds of people: those who delight in hearing the Dharma and those who delight in teaching the Dharma. There are also two kinds of people: those who are skilled at asking questions and those who are skilled at answering. You are skilled at asking questions, and the Tathagata is skilled at answering. Son of good family, because of the skill in asking questions, the unsurpassed wheel of Dharma is turned, therefore the tree of the twelve links of dependent origination withers, one is liberated from the great ocean of endless samsara, and the...

The army of the wicked was defeated, and the banner raised by the wicked was overthrown. Son of good family, what does it mean that I said earlier about the three kinds of patients, that whether they meet a skilled doctor, a nurse, and good medicine or not, they will recover from their illness? Whether they meet them or not, it is like this: the lifespan is fixed. What is fixed? It is that beings have practiced three kinds of virtuous deeds for countless lifetimes. It is like this: superior, intermediate, and inferior. Because of practicing these three kinds of virtuous deeds, the lifespan becomes fixed. For example, if people born in the northern continent of unpleasant sounds (Uttarakuru) can live to a thousand years, if they get sick, even if they meet a skilled doctor, good medicine, and a nurse, etc., or not, they will still live. Why is that? Because they have obtained a fixed lifespan. Son of good family, what does it mean that I said that if a patient meets a skilled doctor, good medicine, and a nurse, they will recover from their illness, but if they do not meet them, they will not live? Son of good family, that person's lifespan is not fixed, and even if their lifespan is not exhausted, they will suddenly die due to nine causes and conditions. What are the nine? Knowing that food is unsuitable but eating it, eating too much, eating again before the previous food is digested, not excreting feces and urine in time, not listening to the doctor's words when sick, not doing as the nurse says, suppressing vomiting after taking emetics, wandering at night and being harmed by evil spirits, and engaging in impure conduct without restraint. Those who become ill due to such causes, if they meet a doctor and medicine, will live; if they do not meet them, they will not live, it is said. Son of good family, what does it mean that I said earlier that even if they meet medicine, etc., or not, they will not live? If a person's lifespan is exhausted, even if they meet a doctor, etc., or not, they will not live. Why is that? Because the lifespan is exhausted. Therefore, I said that that patient, even if they meet medicine and a doctor, etc., or not, they will not live.
