Just doing that. Furthermore, some attendants are not for the sake of Nirvana, but for the sake of gain and fame, they listen to the twelve divisions of the scriptures, yet they regard the common property of the Sangha, the offerings to the Sangha, the use of wealth and food, as if they were their own. They are jealous and stingy when others gain fame and profit. They rely on kings and princes, perform divination, observe good and bad omens, engage in dazzling activities, and use ebony, astrology, punishments, and various games. They associate with bhikshunis and widows, hold two sets of vows, and frequently visit the homes of butchers, hunters, taverns, and the places of low-caste outcasts, engaging in various trades. They make food with their own hands, or go to other people's places as messengers, even doing errands. Such people should be known as the retinue of demons, not my attendants. With these as causes, with these as conditions, the mind arises together with desire, and from desire it ceases together, even to the point where the mind arises together with ignorance and ceases together. Son of good family, with these as causes, with these as conditions, the nature of the mind is neither pure nor impure. Therefore, I say that liberation of mind is attained. One does not accept or hold onto anything that has not been examined. Those who uphold, recite, write, explain, and speak the twelve divisions of the scriptures for the sake of Great Nirvana are my true attendants, and they do not enter the realm of evil demons. It should be known that this is the practice of the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment. Practicing in this way, one does not arise together with desire, nor does one cease together with desire. This is called the bodhisattva's eight qualities of diligence in the Great Nirvana Sutra. Furthermore, son of good family, how does a bodhisattva mahasattva possess nine qualities by diligently applying himself to the Great Nirvana Sutra? Son of good family, a bodhisattva maha

Therefore, by diligently engaging in the great Nirvana Sutra, initially generating five things, everything will be accomplished. What are the five? They are: faith, inner tranquility, discipline, reliance on virtuous friends, and extensive learning. Among them, what is faith? The Bodhisattva Mahasattva believes in the Three Jewels and the results of generosity, believes in the two kinds of tranquility, believes that there is only one path, no other path, and in order to enable sentient beings to quickly attain liberation, believes that the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas have divided it into three kinds, believes in the ultimate truth, and believes in skillful means, this is called faith. Such faith cannot be destroyed by any ascetic, Brahmin, god, demon, Brahma, or all sentient beings. By virtue of this faith, one can attain the nature of a noble being, and whether one gives much or little, one will approach the great Nirvana and will not fall into samsara. Similarly, discipline, extensive learning, and wisdom are also the same as this, this is called faith. Even if one has such faith, but does not view it in this way, then that is a Bodhisattva who possesses the elements for practicing the great Nirvana. Among them, what is inner tranquility? The Bodhisattva Mahasattva maintains an upright mind towards all sentient beings. All sentient beings, if causes and conditions come together, will generate falsehood and deception, but the Bodhisattva is not like that. Why is that? Because he is very skilled in all dharmas arising dependently. The Bodhisattva Mahasattva does not speak of all the faults of sentient beings, even if he sees them. Why is that? Because he is afraid of generating afflictions, and if afflictions arise, he will fall into the lower realms. If the Bodhisattva sees sentient beings having even a little bit of good deeds, he will praise and extol them. What is a good deed? It is the Buddha-nature. Praising the Buddha-nature enables all sentient beings to attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment.

Therefore, in order to generate the mind of Bodhi. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, the universally appearing, noble and glorious king, requested the Bhagavan, saying: Bhagavan, as the Bhagavan said, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva praises the Buddha-nature, causing countless sentient beings to generate the mind of unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment. Isn't that the meaning? Why is that? When the Tathagata first opened the Nirvana Sutra, he spoke of three situations. Which three? If a sick person encounters a skilled doctor, has good medicine and care, the illness will heal quickly. If there are none of these, it will never heal. Whether they meet these or not, they will not heal. Whether they meet these or not, they will eventually heal. These three situations were spoken of. Similarly, all sentient beings, if they encounter a virtuous friend, and hear the Dharma from the Buddha and Bodhisattva, will generate the mind of unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment. If they do not meet, they will not arise, such as: Stream-enterers, Once-returners, Non-returners, Arhats, and Solitary Buddhas. Even if they meet a virtuous friend, and hear the Dharma from the Buddha and Bodhisattva, they cannot generate the mind of Bodhi, and if they do not meet, they cannot generate the mind of Bodhi, such as: those with wrong views. Whether they meet or not, all will generate the mind of unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, such as: Bodhisattvas. Thus it was said. Since this is the case, whether they meet or not, all will generate the mind of unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, then why did the Tathagata say that due to the praise of the Buddha-nature, sentient beings will generate the mind of unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment? Bhagavan, whether they meet a virtuous friend or not, whether they hear the Dharma from the Buddha and Bodhisattva or not, unsurpassed
