What is it to arise together with desire and to cease together with desire? Son of good family, if an ignoble person does not cut off the mind of desire, but is mindful of the mind of desire, this is called the mind arising together with desire and ceasing together with desire. All sentient beings, because they have not cut off the mind of desire, the mind arises together with desire, and the mind ceases together with desire. For example, all sentient beings in the desire realm have the potential for the first dhyana. Whether they meditate or not, they always possess it, and when they encounter the conditions, they will attain it. The condition is like the kalpa of fire. Similarly, all ignoble persons are the same. Whether they meditate or not, the mind arises together with desire and ceases together with desire. Why is that? Because desire has not been cut off. How then does the mind arise together with desire, but not cease together with desire? The close attendant Shravakas, due to causes and conditions, give rise to the mind of desire. Because they fear the mind of desire, they meditate on skeletons. This is called the mind arising together with desire, but not ceasing together with desire. Furthermore, there is the mind arising together with desire, but not ceasing together with desire. For example, those Shravakas who have not attained the four fruits give rise to the mind of desire due to causes and conditions. When they attain the four fruits, the mind of desire will cease. This is called the mind arising together with desire, but not ceasing together with desire. When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva attains the immovable ground, the mind arises together with desire, but does not cease together with desire. How then does one not arise together with desire, but cease together with desire? If a Bodhisattva Mahasattva has cut off the mind of desire, but shows that they have desire for the sake of sentient beings, then by showing it in this way, countless sentient beings will strive for virtuous Dharma and become completely perfect. This is not arising together with desire, but

It is called simultaneous cessation. How is it that one does not arise simultaneously with desire, and does not cease simultaneously with desire? Thus, except for arhats, solitary buddhas, tathagatas, and those who have attained the immovable ground, other bodhisattvas do not arise simultaneously with desire, and do not cease simultaneously with desire. Therefore, whether the nature of the minds of buddhas and bodhisattvas is completely pure or completely impure is not definitely stated. Son of good family, the mind is not connected with the all-pervasive afflictions of desire, nor is it connected with hatred and ignorance. Son of good family, for example, the sun and moon are obscured by smoke, dust, clouds, fog, Rahu, and so on, so that sentient beings cannot see them. Although they are not seen in this way, the nature of the sun and moon is not connected with the five obscurations. The mind is also like that. Because of certain causes and conditions, the all-pervasive afflictions of desire arise, so it is said that the minds of sentient beings are connected with desire, but the nature of the mind is not truly connected. Whatever is the mind of desire is the nature of desire. Whatever is non-desire is the nature of non-desire. The mind of non-desire will not become desire, and the mind of the all-pervasive afflictions of desire will not become non-desire. Son of good family, therefore, the all-pervasive afflictions of desire cannot stain the mind. Buddhas and bodhisattvas have completely destroyed the all-pervasive afflictions of desire, therefore it is said that they have attained the liberation of the mind. All inferior sentient beings arise with the all-pervasive afflictions of desire due to causes and conditions, and the mind becomes liberated due to causes and conditions. Son of good family, for example, on a very steep snowy mountain, neither humans nor monkeys can pass. In some places, monkeys can pass, but humans cannot. In some places, both monkeys and humans can pass. Son of good family, in a place where both humans and monkeys can pass, hunters catch monkeys by smearing wooden boards with glue.
