There are two forms, subtle and coarse. The subtle is permanent, the coarse is impermanent. From the subtle cause arises the coarse cause, and from the coarse cause arises the fruit. Because the coarse is impermanent, the fruit is also impermanent, thus it is explained. Son of good family, some wicked fools also think like this: the mind has no cause, and desire has no cause; time gives rise to the mind of desire, they say. Those and others like them, because they do not understand the cause and condition of the mind, revolve in the six realms, fully taking birth and death. Son of good family, for example, if a dog is tied with a rope and tied to a pillar, it always revolves around the pillar and cannot escape. Similarly, all the various wicked fools are like that; because they are bound to the pillar of samsara by the rope of ignorance, they revolve in the twenty-five existences and cannot escape. Son of good family, for example, some people fall into an unclean pit, and after coming out, they enter it again; just as a sick person recovers from illness and then does things that become the cause of illness; just as some people go to a solitary forest, seemingly having escaped from samsara; just as after washing clean, they smear themselves with mud and dust, all the wicked fools are like that; after being liberated from the realm of nothingness, they are not liberated from the realm of neither perception nor non-perception, so they will return to the three lower realms. Why is that? Because all the wicked fools only fixate on the fruit, and do not fixate on dependent origination. Just as a dog chases a stone but does not chase a person, all the various wicked fools are like that; they only fixate on the fruit, and do not fixate on the cause and condition. Because they do not fixate in that way, they regress from the realm of non-perception and fall back into the three lower realms. Son of good family, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas never definitively teach that there is definitely a fruit in the cause, or that there is definitely no fruit in the cause, or that the fruit both exists and does not exist, or that the fruit is neither existent nor non-existent. Those who say that there is definitely a fruit in the cause from the beginning, or that there is definitely no fruit, or that there is definitely

Or, does it mean that existence exists and non-existence does not exist? If one says that it is not necessarily existence, nor is it necessarily non-existence, then know that they have become accomplices of demons, belong to the retinue of demons, and are those who possess craving. In this way, those who possess existence cannot sever the bonds of samsara, because they do not understand the nature of the mind and the nature of desire. Son of lineage, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are those who show the Middle Way. Why is that? Although they show that all phenomena are neither existent nor non-existent, it is not a singular certainty. How is that? Through the conditions of the eye, form, appearance, mind, and intellect, consciousness arises. That consciousness does not necessarily abide in the eye, nor does it abide within form, appearance, mind, and intellect, nor does it abide in between. It is not existent, nor is it non-existent. Because it arises from dependent origination, it is called existent. Because it is without inherent nature, it is called non-existent. Therefore, the Tathagata teaches that all phenomena are neither existent nor non-existent. Son of lineage, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas do not definitively say that the mind has a nature of purity, nor do they say that it does not have a nature of purity. This is because the mind, whether pure or impure, does not abide. Because desire arises from conditions, it is not non-existent. Because there is no inherent nature of desire from the beginning, it is said to be not existent. Son of lineage, because of dependent origination, the mind of desire arises. Because of dependent origination, the mind is liberated. Son of lineage, there are two aspects to dependent origination: following samsara and following nirvana. Son of lineage, because of dependent origination, the mind arises together with desire, and there is also cessation together with desire. There is arising together with desire, and there is also non-cessation together with desire. There is non-arising together with desire, and there is also cessation together with desire. There is non-arising together with desire, and there is also non-cessation together with desire. So, how is the mind
