Liberation. Son of lineage, how does a Bodhisattva sever five things? It is like these five aggregates: form, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness. What is the meaning of "aggregate"? It is like this: it causes sentient beings to continuously cycle in samsara, it is inseparable from a heavy burden, it causes separation and gathering, and it belongs to the three times. No matter how it is examined, it cannot be determined. These are called aggregates. When a Bodhisattva Mahasattva sees the aggregate of form, he does not cling to characteristics. Why? Because even when examining the nature of the ten aspects of form, it cannot be determined. It is called an aggregate for the sake of the world. There are one hundred and eight kinds of feeling. Even when seeing the aggregate of feeling, there is no characteristic of feeling from the beginning. Why? Because although there are one hundred and eight kinds of feeling, there is no truth or definite meaning. Therefore, a Bodhisattva does not cling to the aggregate of feeling. Similarly, perception, formation, and consciousness are also the same. A Bodhisattva Mahasattva clearly understands that the five aggregates are the root of the arising of afflictions, so he severs them with skillful means. So, how does a Bodhisattva abandon five things? It is like these five views. What are the five? They are the view of the self-aggregate, the extreme view, the wrong view, the view of holding to precepts and vows, and the view of holding to views. Thus, due to the five views, sixty-two views arise. Due to these views, one wanders in samsara continuously. Therefore, a Bodhisattva is cautious and does not approach them. So, how should a Bodhisattva be endowed with six things? It is like these six mindfulnesses. What are the six? They are mindfulness of the Buddha, mindfulness of the Dharma, mindfulness of the Sangha, mindfulness of the deities, mindfulness of generosity, and mindfulness of discipline. This is how a Bodhisattva is endowed with six things. So, how does a Bodhisattva completely cultivate five things? It is like this: samadhi.

There are five kinds of samadhi. What are the five? They are the samadhi of knowledge, the samadhi of peace, the samadhi of touching great joy of body and mind, the samadhi without joy, and the samadhi of going forth bravely. If one cultivates these five kinds of samadhi, one will approach great complete nirvana. Therefore, bodhisattvas should cultivate them completely with diligent minds. How does a bodhisattva guard one thing? It is like this: the mind of enlightenment. Bodhisattvas, great heroes, should always diligently guard the mind of enlightenment. Just as worldly people guard their only child, blind people guard their only eye, or when going to a vast wilderness, they guard their guide, so too, bodhisattvas guarding the mind of enlightenment is similar. In this way, through the cause of guarding the mind of enlightenment, one obtains unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. Due to the condition of obtaining unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, one possesses permanence, bliss, self, and purity. That itself is the unsurpassed great complete nirvana. Therefore, bodhisattvas should diligently guard one thing. How does a bodhisattva attend to four things? They are the four immeasurable minds. What are the four? They are great love, great compassion, great joy, and great equanimity. Through these four minds, one causes countless, limitless beings to generate the mind of enlightenment. Therefore, bodhisattvas should attend to them with one-pointed mind. How does a bodhisattva have faith and follow one true thing? There, bodhisattvas know that all beings go on one path. What is called the one path is the Great Vehicle. Buddhas and bodhisattvas are divided into three forms for the sake of sentient beings. Therefore, bodhisattvas should have faith and follow it, and should not contradict it. How does a bodhisattva have a completely liberated mind? By completely stopping the minds of desire, hatred, and ignorance, the bodhisattva's

It is called the mind being extremely liberated. Among them, what is the wisdom of a Bodhisattva that is extremely liberated? Because a Bodhisattva Mahasattva has no obstruction to all dharmas, it is called the wisdom of a Bodhisattva being extremely liberated. Due to the cause of wisdom liberation, what was not heard before is heard, what was not seen before is seen, and what was not reached before is reached. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Samantabhadra, the noble and glorious king, asked: Venerable Bhagavan, as the Bhagavan said, the liberation of the mind is not that meaning. Why is that? The mind has not been bound from the beginning. How is it? The nature of the mind is not bound by the afflictions of desire, hatred, and ignorance. Since it has not been bound from the beginning, why is it said that the mind is extremely liberated? Bhagavan, if the nature of the mind is not bound by the afflictions of desire, then by what cause and what condition is it bound? It is like milking a horn, because there is no nature of milk from the beginning, so even if a lot of effort is made, milk cannot be produced. Milking a breast is not like that, even if little effort is made, a lot of milk can be produced. Similarly, the mind is also like that, if there is no desire from the beginning, how can it be now? If there is no desire from the beginning, and it will be later, then the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas who originally did not have the nature of desire will also have it now. Bhagavan, for example, a barren woman does not have the nature of a son from the beginning, so no matter how hard she tries and accumulates immeasurable causes and conditions, she cannot become a son. Similarly, the mind is also like that, if there is no nature of desire from the beginning, even if it meets many conditions, desire cannot arise. Bhagavan, just as no fire comes out no matter how much wet wood is rubbed, the mind is also the same, no matter how much it is rubbed, it does not generate desire, so how can the mind be bound by the afflictions of desire?
