Venerable One, just as oil cannot be extracted from sand no matter how much it is squeezed, similarly, the mind is like that; no matter how much it is squeezed, desire does not arise. Therefore, desire and mind are different, so even if there are afflictions, how can they affect the mind? Venerable One, for example, if a stake is driven into the sky, there is no place to attach it. Similarly, implanting desire in the mind is also like that; various causes and conditions cannot bind the mind with desire. Venerable One, if it is said to be liberation because there is no desire in the mind, then why do Buddhas and Bodhisattvas not remove the thorns from the sky? Venerable One, the past mind is not called liberation, and the future mind is also not liberated. If the present mind is not one with enlightenment, then at what time does the mind attain liberation? Venerable One, just as a past lamp cannot dispel darkness, a future lamp also cannot dispel darkness, and a present lamp also does not dispel darkness. Why is that? Because light and darkness are not simultaneous. Similarly, if the mind is like that, why is it said that the mind is liberated? Venerable One, desire exists. If there were no desire, then desire should not arise when seeing a woman. If it arises because of seeing a woman, then it should be known that desire truly exists. Thus, because desire exists, one falls into the three lower realms. Venerable One, for example, some people see the image of a woman painted in a picture and desire arises; because desire arises, they incur various kinds of faults. If there were no desire from the beginning, why would desire arise merely from seeing a picture? If there is no desire in the mind, why does the Thus-Gone One say that Bodhisattvas attain liberation of mind? If there is desire in the mind, why does it arise only after seeing a sign, and not arise if the sign is not seen? I now see that the fruit of evil has ripened, therefore desire

It exists, and hatred and ignorance exist in the same way. World Honored One, for example, sentient beings have bodies but no self, and are perceived as "self" by inferior fools. In this way, even if there is a concept of self-grasping, one will not fall into the three lower realms. Why is it that for a woman with desire, even though there is no characteristic of a woman, the concept of a woman arises, and thus one falls into the three lower realms? World Honored One, for example, fire is produced by friction. Thus, if the nature of fire is not present in all causes, then by what cause and what condition would it arise? World Honored One, desire is also the same. There is no desire in form, and there is no desire in smell, taste, touch, and dharma. Why is it that desire arises from form, smell, taste, touch, and dharma? If there is no desire among many causes, why do only sentient beings generate desire, while Buddhas and Bodhisattvas do not? World Honored One, the mind is also uncertain. If the mind were certain, then there would be no desire, hatred, and ignorance. If it is uncertain, then (you) say that liberation of the mind will be attained. Desire is also uncertain. If it is so, why would one be born in the three lower realms because of it? Therefore, both desire and the object are uncertain. Why? Because when focusing on the same form, sometimes desire arises, sometimes hatred arises, and sometimes ignorance arises. Therefore, both desire and the object are uncertain. If both are uncertain, why does the Thus Come One (you) say that if Bodhisattvas strive for great Nirvana, the mind will be liberated? Then, the World Honored One said to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Samantabhadra Noble Glorious King: Good, good! Son of good family, the mind is not bound by the all-pervasive afflictions of desire, nor is it unbound, it is not liberated, nor is it unliberated, it is not existent, nor is it non-existent, it is not present, nor is it past, nor is it future. Why is that? Good

Son of lineage, all dharmas are without inherent existence. Son of lineage, some non-Buddhists say this: Fruits arise from the aggregation of causes and conditions. If the conditions initially do not have the nature of arising and then become arising, then even space, which is unborn, should be able to produce fruits. Space does not arise because it is not a cause. The conditions initially possess the nature of the fruit, therefore the fruit arises from the aggregation. How is that? For example, when Devadatta builds a wall, he mixes clay and earth, but not paint. When painting, he mixes paint, but not grass and wood. When sewing clothes, he mixes thread, but not clay and wood. When building a house, he mixes clay and wood, but not thread. Thus, by mixing, one knows that fruits arise separately within them. Because the fruit has arisen, there is undoubtedly inherent existence within the cause. If there were no inherent existence, then all things should arise and originate from one thing. Thus, it can be mixed and done. It can be separated, therefore there is undoubtedly a fruit from the beginning within them. If there were no fruit, then no one would mix, separate, or produce it. Space does not mix or separate, therefore it is able to arise and produce all things. Thus, because there is a cause, the seed of the banyan tree resides in the banyan tree, the essence of butter exists in milk, thread becomes cloth, and pottery exists in clay. Son of lineage, all inferior people are obscured by ignorance, therefore they explain it definitively in this way. Color is the meaning of attachment, and the mind is of the nature of desire, so they say. They also say that the mind of inferior people has both the nature of attachment and the nature of liberation. When encountering the cause of attachment, the mind of attachment arises. When encountering the cause of liberation, the mind of liberation arises, so they say, but that is not the true meaning. Other inferior people say this: There is no fruit in all causes. In the cause
