When the sun has not set, it is obscured by a black mountain, so sentient beings cannot see it, but the nature of the sun is truly unsetting. Because sentient beings cannot see it, they give rise to the illusion of setting. Similarly, the close attendants of the Hearers are also like this: obscured by the mountain of afflictions, they cannot see my body. Because they cannot see it, they give rise to the illusion that the Thus-Gone One has passed into Nirvana. I have not truly passed into Nirvana. Therefore, in the vast land, I told the Evil One, "In three months, I will pass into Nirvana." Son of good family, the Thus-Gone One foresaw that the Bodhisattva Light Protector would later have his roots of virtue ripen in three months, and that Subhadra would come from the place with the fragrance of incense, and would come before my eyes. Therefore, I told the Evil One, "In three months, I will pass into Nirvana." Son of good family, furthermore, five hundred mighty ones will generate the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment in three months. Therefore, I told the Evil One, "In three months, I will pass into Nirvana." Son of good family, the five hundred Licchavis, including Tsunda, and the daughter Abra, will also generate the mind of unsurpassed enlightenment in three months, and their roots of virtue will fully ripen. For their sake, I also told the Evil One, "In three months, I will pass into Nirvana." Son of good family, Sunaksatra, who serves naked heretics and others, even though I have taught him the Dharma for twelve years, he has no faith in me and does not believe me, but in three months he will cut off the root of evil views, and I know this with my wisdom. Therefore, I told the Evil One, "In three months, I will pass into Nirvana." Son of good family, for what reason and what cause did I previously say to the Evil One on the banks of the River of Joy, "I will not pass into Nirvana because there are no close attendants who are widely learned"? That was because at that time, at that moment, I thought of turning the Wheel of Dharma in Varanasi for the five monks. Also, for example, Yasha and Purna.

And, for the sake of the five monks, Vimala, GaBampaTi, and SuBAhula, etc. Furthermore, for the sake of fifty people, including the powerful householder. Furthermore, for the sake of countless gods and humans, including the king of the central region, Image Heart (Gzugs can snying po). Furthermore, for the sake of the five hundred monks of the retinue, including Lte ngas 'od srung, and for the sake of the five hundred attendants of the brothers Chu bo 'od srung and Ga yA 'od srung. Furthermore, for the sake of turning the wheel of the sacred Dharma for the one thousand two hundred and fifty monks, including Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, I said to the evil demon, I will not enter nirvana. Son of lineage, there is nirvana, but it is not great nirvana. So, how is it that nirvana is not great nirvana? Cutting off afflictions without seeing the Buddha-nature is called nirvana, but it is not great nirvana. Therefore, because the Buddha-nature is not seen, permanence and self (Atman) are not, but happiness and complete purity are. Therefore, although afflictions are cut off, it cannot be called great nirvana. Whoever sees the Buddha-nature and cuts off afflictions is called great nirvana. Therefore, because the Buddha-nature is seen, it is called permanence, self (Atman), happiness, and complete purity. Therefore, cutting off afflictions in this way is called complete great nirvana. Son of lineage, 'Mya ngan' means not doing. ''das pa' means weaving. The meaning of not weaving is nirvana. Again, ''das pa' means covering. Therefore, the meaning of not covering is nirvana. Again, ''das pa' means going and coming. The meaning of not going and not coming is nirvana. Again, ''das pa' means taking. The meaning of not taking is nirvana. Again, ''das pa' means uncertain. The absence of certainty and uncertainty is nirvana. Again, ''das pa' means new and old. The meaning of no new and old is nirvana. Again, ''das pa' means

Action is obscuration, and the meaning of non-obscuration is called Nirvana. Sons of the lineage, the disciples named Uruka Kapila say that passing away is characteristic, and the meaning of non-characteristic is called Nirvana. Sons of the lineage, what is called passing away is existence, and the meaning of non-existence is called Nirvana. What is called passing away is aggregation, and the meaning of non-aggregation is called Nirvana. What is called passing away is suffering, and the meaning of non-suffering is called Nirvana. Sons of the lineage, cutting off afflictions is not called Nirvana, but that which does not generate afflictions is called Nirvana. Sons of the lineage, the Buddha Bhagavan does not generate afflictions, therefore it is called Nirvana. Possessing wisdom and being unobstructed in Dharma is called Tathagata, and the Tathagata is not an inferior ordinary person, nor a Shravaka, a Pratyekabuddha, or a Bodhisattva, but is Buddha-nature. The wisdom of the Tathagata's body, speech, and mind is unobstructed in all the immeasurable, countless, and limitless realms of the world, therefore it is called space. The Tathagata always abides, unchanging and unmoving, therefore it is called true characteristic. Thus, the Tathagata does not ultimately enter Nirvana, and this is the seven qualities possessed by Bodhisattvas who diligently practice the Mahaparinirvana Sutra. Chapter Thirty-Four. Sons of the lineage, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva possess eight qualities by diligently practicing the Mahaparinirvana Sutra? Sons of the lineage, here, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva who diligently practices the Mahaparinirvana is one who cuts off five things, abandons five things, possesses six things, fully cultivates five things, well protects one thing, attends to four things, generates faith in one truth and follows it, the mind is extremely liberated, and wisdom is extremely
