O Fortunate One, if he were to pass into nirvana at that time, why did he say to the powerful ones in the city of Kushinagar, 'I will completely pass into nirvana at midnight'? Since the Tathagata speaks truthfully, why did he speak those untrue words? Then the Blessed One spoke to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Kuntunangwa Thotsun Palgyi Gyalpo: 'Son of good family, since it is said that the Tathagata possesses a long and broad tongue, it should be known that the Tathagata has been separated from untrue words since immeasurable kalpas. All Buddhas and Bodhisattvas speak words that are appropriate to the occasion, and they are not untrue. Son of good family, as you said, it is true that the evil Mara once requested me to pass into nirvana. Son of good family, the king of demons does not know what the definitive characteristic of passing into nirvana is like. What is the reason for this? The evil Mara thinks that not doing the work of sentient beings and remaining silent is passing into nirvana. Son of good family, for example, when worldly people see someone who does not speak or do anything, they say that this person is no different from dead. Similarly, in the mind of the evil Mara, he thinks that the Tathagata does not do the work of sentient beings and does not speak, and that is the Tathagata passing into nirvana. Son of good family, the Tathagata has not undifferentiatedly explained the nature of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, but has only undifferentiatedly explained the two dharmas of permanence and purity. Son of good family, the Tathagata has not undifferentiatedly explained the nature of the Buddha, Buddha-nature, and nirvana, but has only undifferentiatedly explained reality and constant immutability. Son of good family, the Tathagata has not undifferentiatedly explained the nature of nirvana and truth, but has only undifferentiatedly explained that which is eternally existent, truly immutable, and unchangeable. Son of good family, at that time, all my Shravaka attendants will argue, like the monks of the country of Kaushambi.'
