Therefore, by the cause of listening to the Dharma, one will approach complete Nirvana. How does a Bodhisattva approach complete Nirvana through the cause of remembrance? Like this, the mind is liberated through the cause of contemplation. Why is that? Because all sentient beings are always entangled by the five desires, and by contemplating their faults, they become liberated. Therefore, by the cause of contemplation, one will approach complete Nirvana. Furthermore, son of good family, all sentient beings are always deluded by the four inverted views of permanence, pleasure, self, and purity. By contemplating, they will see that all phenomena are impermanent, suffering, selfless, and impure. Having seen this, the four inversions will also be severed. Therefore, by the cause of contemplation, one will approach complete Nirvana. Furthermore, son of good family, all phenomena have four characteristics. What are the four? The characteristic of arising, the characteristic of aging, the characteristic of sickness, and the characteristic of cessation. Due to these four characteristics, all beings from ordinary people to stream-enterers will be greatly afflicted. If one contemplates single-mindedly, even if one encounters these four phenomena, affliction will not arise. Therefore, by the cause of contemplation, one will approach complete Nirvana. Furthermore, son of good family, all virtuous dharmas cannot be obtained from others without contemplation. Why is that? If someone listens to the Dharma single-mindedly for immeasurable, countless, and boundless eons, but does not contemplate, then they will not attain unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. Therefore, by the cause of attention, one will approach complete Nirvana. Furthermore, son of good family, if a sentient being has unwavering faith in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and respects and honors them, then it should be known that this is because of single-minded attention, and all afflictions will be severed. Therefore, by the cause of attention, one will approach complete

One will approach great Nirvana. How does a Bodhisattva practice according to the Dharma? Noble son, whoever abandons all non-virtuous dharmas and diligently engages in virtuous dharmas is called a Bodhisattva practicing according to the Dharma. Furthermore, how does one practice according to the Dharma? Seeing all dharmas as empty, without characteristics, impermanent, without happiness, without self, and impure. Having seen in this way, even if body and life are lost, the vows of morality are not destroyed, this is called a Bodhisattva practicing according to the Dharma. Furthermore, how does one practice according to the Dharma? There are two types of practice: correct and incorrect. Among them, incorrect practice is not knowing the nature of Nirvana, Buddha-nature, Tathagata, Dharma, Sangha, correct view, and space, which is called incorrect practice. What is called correct practice is knowing the nature of Nirvana, Buddha-nature, Tathagata, Dharma, Sangha, correct view, and space, which is called correct practice. Then, how does one know the nature of Nirvana? The nature of Nirvana has eight aspects. What are the eight? Exhaustion, the nature of virtue, truth, correctness, permanence, happiness, self, and complete purity. That is Nirvana. Furthermore, there are eight aspects. What are the eight? Liberation, the nature of virtue, incorrectness, untruth, impermanence, unhappiness, selflessness, and impurity. Furthermore, there are six characteristics. What are they? Liberation, the nature of virtue, untruth, incorrectness, happiness, and complete purity. If any sentient being relies on the conventional path and cuts off afflictions, Nirvana has eight aspects, namely, liberation is untrue. Why? Because it is impermanent. Thus, because of impermanence, there is no truth. Because there is no truth, there is no correctness, even if afflictions are cut off, they will return.

Therefore. Impermanence, selflessness, unpleasantness, and impurity are the eight things of Nirvana liberation. What are the six characteristics? Hearers and solitary Buddhas are called liberation because they have cut off defilements, but they are called untrue because they cannot attain the supreme perfect enlightenment. Because it is untrue, it is called unreal. In the future, it is called impermanent because it will become the supreme perfect enlightenment. It is called happiness and purity because it has attained the eight noble paths without leakage. A son of a lineage who knows this way is said to know Nirvana, to know the true nature of Buddha-nature, Tathagata, Dharma, Sangha, and the nature of space. How does a Bodhisattva know the Buddha-nature? There are six kinds of Buddha-nature. What are the six? Constant, pure, true, good, visible, and correct. There are also seven other things. What are the seven? Knowable, the six are the same as above. This is the Bodhisattva knowing the Buddha-nature. How does a Bodhisattva know the nature of the Tathagata? The so-called Tathagata is the nature of feeling, the nature of goodness, constant, happy, self, pure liberation, true, correct, and feasible like guiding the road. This is the Bodhisattva knowing the nature of the Tathagata. How does a Bodhisattva know the nature of the Dharma? The so-called knowing the Dharma is: good and bad, constant and impermanent, happy and unhappy, self and selfless, pure and impure, knowing and not knowing, clear and unclear, true and untrue, practice and non-practice, teacher and non-teacher, correct and incorrect. Knowing these is the Bodhisattva knowing the nature of the Dharma.
