The monkey, wanting to eat the *the tsom* grass, reached out its hand to taste it. The hand touched it and became stuck. Desiring to free the hand, it stepped on it with its foot, and the foot also became stuck. Desiring to free the foot, it grabbed it with its mouth, and the mouth also became stuck. Thus, all five limbs were lost. Then the hunter placed it on his staff, carried it on his shoulder, and went home. Similarly, the steep place of the snowy mountain is an example of how the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas attain the true path. The monkey is an example of the various base people. The hunter is an example of the evil demon. The trap is an example of being completely afflicted by desire. That neither the man nor the monkey can escape is an example of how neither the base people nor the evil demon can escape. That the monkey escapes but the man does not is an example of how the five desires, including the evil demon, cannot bind those non-Buddhists who possess wisdom. That both the man and the monkey escape is an example of how the base people and the evil demon always remain in cyclic existence and cannot diligently practice. The base people, bound by the five desires, are easily carried away by the evil demon, just as the hunter catches the monkey, carries it on his shoulder, and goes home. Son of good family, for example, if a king resides in his own territory, both body and mind are at ease. If he goes to another's territory, much suffering will arise. Similarly, all sentient beings are the same; if they abide in their own realm of activity, they are very happy. If they abide in another's territory, they will encounter the evil demon and experience much suffering. One's own realm of activity is the four close placements of mindfulness. Another's territory is the five desires. How does one belong to the retinue of demons? Some sentient beings regard impermanence as permanence, regard permanence as impermanence, regard suffering as happiness, regard happiness as suffering, regard purity as impurity, regard impurity as purity, regard selflessness as self, regard self as selflessness, regard what is not truly liberated as liberated, truly

Moreover, to regard liberation as non-liberation, to regard non-vehicle as vehicle, and to regard vehicle as non-vehicle, these are called being bound by the demon. Being bound by the demon means the mind is untamed. Furthermore, son of good family, if someone regards all dharmas as truly existent and definitely sees their individual characteristics, then when he sees form, he clings to the characteristic of form, and up to seeing consciousness, he also clings to the characteristic of consciousness. He sees a man as the characteristic of a man, a woman as the characteristic of a woman, the sun as the characteristic of the sun, the moon as the characteristic of the moon, and a year as the characteristic of a year. He sees aggregates as the characteristic of aggregates, sense bases as the characteristic of sense bases, and elements as the characteristic of elements. To see in such a way is called being bound by the demon, and being bound by the demon means the mind is untamed. Furthermore, son of good family, if someone regards the self as form, and that the self exists within form, and form also exists within the self, and that form belongs to the self, and up to regarding the self as consciousness, and that the self exists within consciousness, and consciousness also exists within the self, and that consciousness belongs to the self, to see in such a way is being bound by the demon, belongs to the retinue of the demon, and is not my attendant. Son of good family, my Shravaka attendants, in this way abandon the twelve divisions of scripture, and study the writings of non-Buddhists and various treatises, and do not cultivate the peaceful path of renunciation, but only perform the activities of worldly householders. How do they perform the activities of householders? It is by holding all unexamined possessions. For example, holding male and female servants, fields and houses, yaks and cattle, horses and carts, mules and donkeys, birds and dogs, monkeys and pigs, sheep, and various grains, abandoning the Khenpo and the Sangha, relying on laypeople, contradicting the noble Dharma, and saying to the laypeople, 'The Buddha allows monks to hold various unexamined possessions.' To speak in this way is to perform the activities of householders.
