And, I, having entered into complete purity, expound and reveal the Great Nirvana Sutra for all sentient beings, manifesting the Buddha-nature. If Sravakas, Stream-enterers, Once-returners, Non-returners, Arhats, Pratyekabuddhas, or Bodhisattvas believe in these words, all will enter into Great Nirvana. Those who do not believe will wander in samsara. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, the universally appearing, noble and glorious king, said to the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, which sentient beings will not respect this sutra? The Blessed One replied: Son of good family, after my Nirvana, the Sravaka's attendants, the foolish ones, who break their vows, delight in disputes, abandon the twelve divisions of the scriptures, and recite and read various heretical treatises, as well as worldly writings and verses, holding all unexamined things, and saying that this is permitted by the Buddha, these people are like replacing bad wood with good sandalwood, replacing brass with gold, replacing lead with silver, replacing wool with silk, and replacing honey with poison. How is it that sandalwood replaces bad wood? My attendants, for the sake of gain and fame, explain this Great Nirvana Sutra and the Dharma to householders, but the householders, being wealthy, do not want to listen, and instead place them in a higher position, with the monks sitting below, and even if they offer various delicious foods, they are unwilling to listen, this is called replacing bad wood with sandalwood. How is it that gold replaces brass? Brass is an example of form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. Gold is an example of discipline, my attendants, because of external appearances, destroy the vows they have taken, this is called replacing brass with gold. How is it that silver replaces lead? Silver is an example of the ten virtues. Lead is an example of the ten non-virtues, my attendants abandon the ten virtues and practice the ten non-virtues, this is called replacing lead with silver. How is it that silk replaces wool?

Then, the so-called "coarse cloth" is an example of having no shame or scruples. Silk is an example of having shame and scruples. My attendants abandon shame and scruples, becoming without shame or scruples, this is called exchanging silk for coarse cloth. How is the exchange of nectar and poison? Poison is an example of various kinds of gain and fame. Nectar is an example of undefiled Dharmas. My attendants, for the sake of gain and fame, greatly praise householders, and say that they have obtained the undefiled Dharma, this is called exchanging nectar for poison. Like this and so on, for the sake of evil monks, this supreme Mahaparinirvana Sutra was widely spread in Jambudvipa. At that time, if some attendants write down this sutra, uphold it, read it, or explain it, propagate it, then those evil monks will kill them. Then, those evil monks gathered together and made these strict precepts: If anyone writes, upholds, reads, explains, or elucidates this Mahaparinirvana Sutra, then all shall not live together with him, shall not stay together, shall not speak. Why is this? Because this Nirvana Sutra is not spoken by the Buddha, but is made by those with evil views. Those with evil views are the six heretical teachers, this is the sutra of the six heretical teachers, not the sutra of the Buddha. How is that? The Buddhas say that all Dharmas are impermanent, selfless, without happiness, and impure. If someone says that Dharmas are permanent, happy, self, and pure, then why say that this is the sutra spoken by the Buddha? The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas allow monks to hold various kinds of items, but what the six heretical teachers say does not allow attendants to hold any items, therefore, why say that this is spoken by the Buddha? The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas have not forbidden attendants from eating the five excellent flavors made from cow's milk and meat, etc.

Ground. The six teachers do not allow eating five kinds of salt and five kinds of flavors of cow's milk, as well as oil and blood, etc. Since they are not allowed to eat these, it cannot be said that this is the supreme Dharma of the Buddha. The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas teach the three vehicles, but this sutra only teaches one vehicle, the Great Nirvana. Why is this called the supreme Dharma of the Buddha? The Buddha said that he would ultimately enter Nirvana, but this sutra says that the Buddha is permanent, blissful, self, and pure, and does not enter Nirvana. This sutra is not included in the twelve categories of scriptures, but is spoken by demons, not by the Buddha. Sons of good families, although they are my attendants, they cannot believe in or follow this Nirvana Sutra. Sons of good families, if at that time any sentient being believes in even half a verse of this sutra, know that they are my true attendants. Because of such faith, they will see the Buddha-nature and enter Nirvana. Then, the Bodhisattva Sarvadarshana High Noble Glorious King said to the Bhagavan: "Bhagavan, well said, well said! The Tathagata has today fully explained and well taught the Great Nirvana Sutra. Bhagavan, because of that cause, I have understood and comprehended from one verse to half a verse of this Great Nirvana Sutra. Because of comprehending from one verse to half a verse, I have seen a little bit of the Buddha-nature, and as the Bhagavan has said, I will also attain the Great Nirvana. This is what is called the ten qualities possessed by a Bodhisattva who diligently practices the Nirvana Sutra or the supreme scripture." In the Holy Great Nirvana Sutra, the one called Bodhisattva Sarvadarshana High Noble Glorious King, completely
