That is, whoever does so is called a true virtuous friend. Because one diligently strives for Bodhi and also causes others to diligently strive for Bodhi, therefore one is called a virtuous friend. Because one cultivates faith, discipline, generosity, extensive learning, and wisdom, and also causes others to cultivate faith, discipline, generosity, extensive learning, and wisdom, therefore one is called a virtuous friend. One is called a virtuous friend because one possesses Dharma. What are the virtuous Dharmas? It is like this: whatever one does, one does not seek happiness for oneself, but always seeks happiness for sentient beings, and even if one sees the faults of others, one does not speak of their shortcomings, but always speaks only of virtuous Dharmas. Therefore, one is called a virtuous friend. Son of good family, for example, the moon gradually increases from the first day to the fifteenth day of the lunar month, similarly, a virtuous friend is also like that, causing disciples to gradually move away from non-virtuous Dharmas and increase virtuous Dharmas. Son of good family, if someone attends upon a virtuous friend, discipline, concentration, wisdom, liberation, and the knowledge and vision of liberation, etc., those that were not there before will also arise. Those that are not complete will also arise and increase. What is the reason for that? It is because of attending upon a virtuous friend. Because of the cause of attending in that way, one can also understand the extremely profound meaning of the twelve divisions of the scriptures. Hearing the extremely profound meaning of the twelve divisions of the scriptures is called hearing the Dharma. Hearing the Dharma itself is called the Sutra of the Great Vehicle that is extremely extensive, and hearing the extremely extensive Sutra is called truly hearing the Dharma. Truly hearing the Dharma is hearing the Sutra of Complete Nirvana, and within the Great Nirvana there is the Buddha-nature, and it is heard that the Tathagata will ultimately not completely pass into Nirvana, therefore it is called listening to the Dharma with one-pointedness. Listening to the Dharma with one-pointedness is called the Noble Eightfold Path, and the Noble Eightfold Path can eliminate desire, hatred, and ignorance.

Therefore, it is called listening to the Dharma. Listening to the Dharma refers to eleven kinds of emptiness, through which all dharmas are not regarded as characteristics. Listening to the Dharma refers to the initial generation of the mind of enlightenment (Bodhicitta), from the cause of the initial generation of Bodhicitta, until the attainment of the unsurpassed, the Tamer of Beings, the perfectly complete and awakened Bodhi mind, and even until the attainment of the Great Nirvana. However, it is not through hearing that one attains the Great Nirvana, but through complete practice that one attains the Great Nirvana. Son of good family, just as a sick person cannot be cured merely by hearing the doctor's diagnosis and the names of medicines, but is cured by taking the medicine. Similarly, merely hearing the twelve profound dharmas of dependent origination does not cut off all afflictions, but it is through single-pointed concentration and extreme effort that they are cut off, which is called diligent attention. Furthermore, why should one diligently attend? For example, there are three samadhis: the samadhi of emptiness, the samadhi of signlessness, and the samadhi of wishlessness. Among them, emptiness refers to not seeing even a single truth in the twenty-five existences. Wishlessness refers to not having desires and seeking for the twenty-five existences. Signlessness refers to the absence of ten signs, namely, the sign of form, the sign of sound, the sign of smell, the sign of taste, the sign of touch, the sign of birth, the sign of abiding, the sign of cessation, the sign of male, and the sign of female. Thus, practicing the three samadhis is called the diligent attention of a Bodhisattva. Then, how does one act in accordance with the Dharma? Acting in accordance with the Dharma means practicing the perfection of generosity (Dāna pāramitā) up to the perfection of wisdom (Prajñā pāramitā), being skilled in the true nature of the five aggregates (skandhas), the sense bases (āyatanas), and the elements (dhātus), and also knowing that the Hearers (Śrāvakas), Solitary Buddhas (Pratyekabuddhas), and the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, also enter into the one and only Nirvana in the same way. The term "Dharma" refers to
