It is seen as formless, just as one sees through a mist. Why is it called diamond-like samadhi? Son of good family, for example, if a diamond is placed in the sun, its color is not fixed to one. Similarly, if diamond-like samadhi is placed among many things, its color will not be fixed. Therefore, it is called diamond-like samadhi. Son of good family, for example, a diamond is priceless to all worldly people. Similarly, the merits of diamond-like samadhi cannot be estimated or measured by all gods and humans. Therefore, it is called diamond-like samadhi. Son of good family, for example, if a poor person finds a precious diamond, he will be free from the suffering of poverty and all the harm of demons and evil views. Similarly, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva obtains that samadhi, he will be free from the suffering of afflictions and all the harm of demons and evil views. Therefore, it is called diamond-like samadhi. This is the sixth merit that a Bodhisattva obtains by diligently practicing the Great Nirvana. The Noble Great Nirvana Sutra, Volume Thirty-Three. Furthermore, son of good family, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva diligently practice the Great Nirvana Sutra and possess the seventh merit? Son of good family, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva diligently practices the Great Nirvana Sutra, he thinks, 'Which dharmas can become the proximate cause of the Great Nirvana?' The Bodhisattva understands that these four dharmas can become the proximate cause of the Great Nirvana, and it is not that practicing all austerities will become the proximate cause of the Great Nirvana. Why? Because there is no place to attain Nirvana beyond these four dharmas. What are the four? They are: attending to virtuous friends, listening to the Dharma with one-pointed mind, and after hearing, diligently keeping it in mind,

To strive diligently in accordance with what is truly right. Son of good family, for example, if someone is afflicted by bile disorders, phlegm disorders, and many diseases, or possessed by evil spirits, that patient goes to a skilled doctor. The doctor diagnoses the disease as it is and prescribes medicine. The patient listens attentively and prepares the medicine according to the prescription, and if the medicine is taken well, the disease will be cured and the body will become healthy. In this case, the patient is like a Bodhisattva. The skilled doctor is like a virtuous friend. The doctor's prescription is like the extensive Sutra Pitaka. Listening carefully and remembering the doctor's prescription is like diligently contemplating the meaning of the extensive Sutra. Preparing the medicine according to the prescription is like practicing the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment as they truly are. The cure of the disease is like the cessation of afflictions. Obtaining well-being is like obtaining the permanence, bliss, self, and purity of Nirvana. Son of good family, for example, a king who wishes to rule the country according to Dharma and bring happiness to the people asks wise ministers how to do it well. Then the ministers speak of the ways in which previous kings ruled the country. The king, having heard this, believes it with all his heart and rules the country in that way, and as a result, all enemies are eliminated. Therefore, the people are happy and unharmed. Son of good family, the king is like a Bodhisattva. The wise minister is like a virtuous friend. The wise minister speaking to the king about the way to rule the country is like the twelve divisions of the Sutras. The king, having heard this, believes it with all his heart and puts it into practice, just as Bodhisattvas contemplate the profound meaning of the twelve divisions of the Sutras with all their heart and strive diligently. Ruling the country according to Dharma is like Bodhisattvas diligently practicing the six perfections as they truly are. The reason for diligently practicing the six perfections is because of diligently practicing the six perfections. The elimination of all enemies is like Bodhisattvas eliminating all the enemies of afflictions.

It is like completely abandoning desires. Obtaining happiness is like how a Bodhisattva obtains the permanence, happiness, self, and purity of complete Nirvana. Son of good family, for example, a person afflicted with a terrible leprosy. A friendly companion says to him, "If you go to the foot of Mount Meru, all your diseases will be cured." Why? Because there is a good medicine there, with a taste like nectar. If you drink it, there is no disease that will not be cured. Then that person, believing it, goes to the foot of that mountain. He gathers and eats the medicine that tastes like nectar, and the disease is cured, and his body becomes comfortable. The terrible leprosy is like bad habits. The so-called friendly companion is like the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas. Believing wholeheartedly is like the four immeasurables. Mount Meru is like the Noble Eightfold Path. The taste of nectar is like the Buddha-nature. The so-called curing of leprosy is like being free from afflictions. Obtaining happiness is like obtaining the permanence, happiness, self, and purity of Nirvana. Son of good family, for example, if a teacher has a student who is very intelligent, the teacher will not be tired of teaching him day and night. Similarly, Bodhisattvas are not tired of constantly teaching all sentient beings, whether they believe or not. Son of good family, the so-called virtuous friend is one who has great faith in the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Shravakas. Why? Because the so-called virtuous friend causes sentient beings to abandon the ten non-virtuous actions and practice the ten virtuous actions. Therefore, he is called a virtuous friend. Furthermore, a virtuous friend is one who teaches the Dharma as it is and practices as he teaches. How does one teach the Dharma as it is and practice as he teaches? For example, by not killing oneself, one teaches others not to kill, and by diligently cultivating right view oneself, one encourages others to diligently cultivate right view.
