Just like the Dharma of protection, it is the most excellent among all virtuous Dharmas. Son of good family, just as the Dharma of Great Nirvana is the most supreme and ultimate among the Dharmas of the Buddha, similarly, the Dharma of protection is also the same, being the most excellent and supreme among all virtuous Dharmas. Son of good family, therefore, the root of protection is profound and stable, and extremely difficult to uproot. How does protection increase and grow from above? It is like this: the root of faith, the root of discipline, the root of generosity, the root of wisdom, the root of patience, the root of learning, the root of diligence, the root of mindfulness, the root of samadhi, the root of virtuous friends, and other similar roots, for the sake of protection, increase and grow from above. Having thus increased and grown, it becomes extremely profound and stable, and very difficult to uproot. Therefore, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, by diligently engaging in the Great Nirvana, have roots that are deep and difficult to uproot. How does one enter into the characteristic of the body not being consumed? Generate the mind that my body will not be consumed, like this: May this body of mine in the future not be consumed, and become a vessel for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Similarly, may the mind not become small and weak, not change and transform. Not the mind of a Hearer or a Solitary Buddha, not the mind of a demon, not the mind of seeking self-happiness and attachment to samsara, but constantly seeking the mind of loving-kindness and compassion for sentient beings, this body of the Bodhisattva himself will not be consumed in the future, and will become a vessel for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Therefore, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, by diligently engaging in the Great Nirvana, generate the perception of their own body not being consumed. How do Bodhisattva Mahasattvas not discriminate between fields of merit and non-fields of merit? A field of merit is said to be from engaging in the asceticism of non-Buddhists...

Until reaching Buddhahood, it is called a field of merit. If one thinks, 'They are truly fields of merit!' know that their mind is weak and small. A Bodhisattva-Mahasattva does not regard any of the immeasurable beings as not being fields of merit. Why is that? Because they have greatly cultivated various different recollections. Whoever has various different recollections and has greatly cultivated them does not see all beings as keeping vows or breaking vows. They always see that the four kinds of giving spoken of by the Buddha, the Bhagavan, all obtain pure results. What are the four? They are: the giver is pure and the receiver is impure; the giver is impure and the receiver is pure; the giver and the receiver are both pure; and the giver and the receiver are both impure. How is the giver pure and the receiver impure? For example, the giver has morality, much learning, and wisdom, and knows that giving and its fruition exist. But the receiver has broken their morality and clings to evil views, believing that there is no giving and no fruition. This is called the giver being pure and the receiver being impure. How is the receiver pure and the giver impure? In that case, the giver has broken their morality and clings to wrong views, believing that there is no giving and no fruition. But the receiver keeps their morality, is learned, and has wisdom, knowing that giving and the fruition of giving exist. This is called the giver being impure and the receiver being pure. How are the giver and the receiver both pure? In that case, both the giver and the receiver keep their morality, are learned, and have wisdom, knowing that giving and the fruition of giving exist. This is called the giver and the receiver both being pure. How are both impure? Both the giver and the receiver have broken their morality, hold evil views, and believe that there is no giving and no fruition of giving. If that is the case, why would they obtain pure results?
