It is called the Great Nirvana. The mind is completely pure. If it is accompanied by defilements, it is called impure. The Thus-Come One has no defilements, so it is called the Great Purity. Because of the Great Purity, it is called the Great Nirvana, which are four in total. Good son, if a good son or a good daughter cultivates this Great Nirvana Sutra, it is called possessing merit. Furthermore, good son, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva diligently studies the Great Nirvana Sutra, how is it called possessing the second kind of merit? Good son, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva diligently studies the Great Nirvana Sutra, what was not previously obtained will be obtained, what was not previously seen will be seen, what was not previously heard will be heard, what was not previously reached will be reached, and what was not previously known will be known. So, how is it said that what was not previously obtained will be obtained? For example, what was not previously obtained, now the supernormal power is obtained. There are two kinds of supernormal powers: internal and external. External refers to what is commonly shared with non-Buddhists. Internal also has two kinds: the Two Vehicles and the Bodhisattvas. The supernormal power obtained by a Bodhisattva who diligently studies the Great Nirvana Sutra is not shared by the Hearers and the Solitary Buddhas. So, how is it said that it is not shared by the Hearers and the Solitary Buddhas? For example, the supernormal powers and illusions transformed by the Two Vehicles have only one thought and one action, and will not become many. Bodhisattvas are not like that, one thought can fully manifest the body in the five realms. Why? Because of the blessing power of this Great Nirvana Sutra, power is obtained, so it is called what was not previously obtained is now obtained. Again, how is it said that what was not previously obtained is now obtained? For example, obtaining the mastery of the body and obtaining the mastery of the mind. What is that? All lowly people, because they have not obtained the mastery of body and mind, sometimes the mind follows the body, and sometimes

As the earth follows external conditions, so does the body. How does the mind follow the body's external conditions? For example, when people are drunk with alcohol, because there is alcohol inside the body, when the body moves, the mind also follows. Furthermore, when the body is tired, the mind also becomes tired. This is what is meant by the mind following the body's external conditions. Furthermore, a child's body is small, so the mind is also small. A large person's body is large, so the mind is also similarly large. Furthermore, some people have rough bodies, so they always desire smoothness, softness, and gentleness in their minds. This is what is meant by the mind following the body's external conditions. How does the body follow the mind's external conditions? For example, going, coming, sitting, lying down, giving, keeping precepts, patience, and diligence. Whoever is excessively sad has a weak body. Happiness makes the body strong and radiant. Fear makes the body tremble. Listening to the Dharma with one-pointedness makes the body extremely happy. Beating the chest and crying causes tears and snot to flow. This is what is meant by the body following the mind's external conditions. Bodhisattvas are not like this, because they have obtained mastery over both body and mind, so it is said that what was not obtained before is now obtained. Furthermore, noble son, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas can show the power of the body to be as small as a mote of dust. With that dust-like body, they can travel unimpeded throughout countless Buddha-fields as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, yet the mind always remains still, not moving from its previous state. This is what is meant by the mind not following the body's external conditions, and it can also be said that they have gone where they had not gone before. How is it that they have gone where they had not gone before? Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas cannot go, but Bodhisattvas can go, therefore it is said that they have now gone where they had not gone before. Although Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas have miraculous powers, they cannot transform their bodies into motes of dust and travel throughout Buddha-fields as numerous as the sands of the Ganges. When Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas move their bodies, their minds also follow. Bodhisattvas are not like this; although the mind does not move, there is no place the body cannot reach. This is the Bodhisattva.
