It is also similar to falling into a deep abyss. If one does not reach the bottom of the abyss, one will revolve endlessly in the twenty-five existences. The so-called abyss is the nature of emptiness. If one does not diligently practice the nature of emptiness, one should know that one cannot be far from the twenty-five existences. All sentient beings, because they do not diligently practice emptiness and signlessness, are constantly carried away by the torrent of afflictions. The great water of the world can only make the body drift and perish, but it cannot make all virtuous dharmas drift. The great water of afflictions is not like that, it can destroy all the virtuous dharmas of body and mind. The great flood of the world can only make the people of the desire realm drift and be carried away, but the great water of afflictions can make all the gods and humans of the three realms drift and be carried away. The great water of the world, if scooped with hands and stepped on with feet, one can reach the other shore. The great water of afflictions, only Bodhisattvas can reach the other shore with the boat of the six perfections. Just as the great water is extremely difficult to cross, the great water of afflictions is also extremely difficult to cross. So, how is it called extremely difficult to cross? Because even the tenth-ground Bodhisattvas have not finally crossed over, only the Buddha can finally cross over, therefore it is called extremely difficult to cross. For example, if someone is carried away by the great water, they cannot practice even a hair's breadth of virtuous dharma. Sentient beings are also like that, if they are carried away by the water of afflictions, they cannot practice virtuous dharma. Just as if someone falls into the water and is carried away, those with power can still rescue them. But those with wrong views who have fallen into the water of afflictions, even Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and even Tathagatas, cannot rescue them. The great water of the world, at the end of the kalpa, can be dried up by being scorched by seven suns. The great river of afflictions is not like that, even if Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas cultivate the seven limbs of enlightenment, they cannot dry it up. Therefore, Bodhisattvas should regard afflictions as being like a flood, such as

For example, that person, terrified by four poisonous snakes, five evil clans, a deceptive disguise like intimacy, and six great enemies, abandons the empty city and embarks on a journey. On the way, he encounters a great river and gathers grass and wood to make a raft. A Bodhisattva is also like that, terrified by the four great poisonous snakes, the five aggregates as evil clans, the deceptive disguise of desire as intimacy, the empty city of the six sense bases, and the fierce enemies of the six objects, he goes to the bank of the river of afflictions. He makes a boat and raft by cultivating morality, concentration, liberation, the knowledge and vision of liberation, the six perfections, and the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment. Relying on that raft, he crosses the river of afflictions and reaches the other shore, attaining the ultimate state of Nirvana, which is permanent, blissful, self, and pure. When a Bodhisattva cultivates great Nirvana, he thinks thus: If I cannot endure the suffering of the body and the suffering of the mind, then I cannot liberate all sentient beings from the river of afflictions. Having thought thus, even though his body and mind are tormented by such suffering, he silently endures it. Having endured it, defilements will no longer arise. If such a Bodhisattva does not have defilements, what need is there to mention that the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, do not have defilements? Therefore, the Tathagata should not be said to be with defilements. If it is said that the Tathagata is also not without defilements, it is because the Tathagata always dwells within that which has defilements. That which has defilements is the twenty-five existences. Therefore, the Shravakas and the inferior people say that the Bhagavat has defilements, but in reality, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, are without defilements. Son of good family, because of that cause and that condition, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, are without निश्चित (nges pa'i mtshan nyid). Son of good family, therefore, those who destroy the four root vows of morality, slander the profoundly vast sutras, and those with wrong views are also uncertain. That's it.
