Easy to abandon. But desire is not like that; it has no beginning or end, so it is extremely difficult to abandon. An enemy pretends to be close, and it is difficult to detect from afar, but easy to detect when near. Desire is not like that; it is difficult to detect even when near, let alone far away. Therefore, a Bodhisattva is even more aware of desire than an enemy pretending to be close. All sentient beings, due to the all-pervasive afflictions of desire, are far from great Nirvana and close to Samsara. They are far from permanence, bliss, self, and purity, and close to impermanence, suffering, non-self, and impurity. Therefore, I have explained the three kinds of defilements in all the Sutras: because of ignorance, one does not see the faults in the present objects, and therefore cannot abandon them. The enemy of desire pretends to be close, but no wise or intelligent person can be harmed. Therefore, the Bodhisattva thoroughly realizes this desire, generates great fear, and diligently practices the eightfold noble path, just as that person, fearing four poisonous snakes, five kinds of evil lineages, and one who pretends to be close, enters the road and does not turn back. An empty city refers to the six sense bases. A Bodhisattva Mahasattva contemplates the six internal sense bases as empty and devoid of anything, like an empty city. Just as a fearful person enters an empty city and sees no one, and looks at pottery and vessels but finds nothing, so too, if a Bodhisattva properly examines the six sense bases, they are empty and devoid of anything, and does not see the true existence of sentient beings. Therefore, a Bodhisattva contemplates the six internal sense bases as empty and devoid of anything, like that empty city. Son of good family, if enemies and thieves look at that empty city from afar, they do not generate the perception of emptiness. Ignorant ordinary people are also like that; they do not generate the perception of emptiness in the city of the six sense bases. Because the perception of emptiness is not generated,

Again, revolving in samsara, one experiences immeasurable suffering. Son of good family, when enemies and thieves arrive there, just as the perception of emptiness arises initially, so too is it with the bodhisattva. If one examines these six sense bases, the perception of emptiness constantly arises. By generating the perception of emptiness, one will not revolve in samsara and will not experience suffering. The bodhisattva mahasattva does not become inverted with regard to these six sense bases. Because he does not become inverted, he does not revolve in samsara. Furthermore, son of good family, thieves will gain happiness if they enter an empty city. The thieves of afflictions are also the same; they will gain happiness if they enter these six sense bases. Thus, just as thieves have no fear when they dwell in an empty city, so too is it with the enemies of afflictions; if they dwell in these six sense bases, there is no fear. Just as that empty city is like a dwelling place for lions, tigers, jackals, and all fierce wild animals, so too are the inner six sense bases; they are the dwelling place for all the many fierce wild animals of afflictions. Therefore, the bodhisattva should thoroughly realize that the six sense bases are empty and devoid of anything, and are the dwelling place of all non-virtue. Furthermore, son of good family, the bodhisattva mahasattva contemplates the inner six sense bases as empty and devoid of anything, like that empty city. Why is that? Because they deceive with what is not true; they perceive what is empty and devoid of anything as existent, they perceive what is truly without happiness as happiness, and they perceive what is truly without people as people. The inner six sense bases are also the same; they perceive what is empty and devoid of anything as existent, they perceive what is truly without happiness as happiness, and they perceive what is truly without people as people. Only a wise and intelligent person is able to truly know them as they are. Furthermore, son of good family, an empty city sometimes has people and sometimes does not. The six sense bases are not like that; on one hand, they do not

Oh yes. Why is that? Because of the emptiness of inherent existence. What the wise know through wisdom is not seen by the eye. Therefore, a Bodhisattva, realizing that the six internal sense bases are enemies and cause much harm, diligently strives on the Noble Eightfold Path without stopping or being lazy, just as that person fears four poisonous snakes, five evil clans, one deceiver disguised as a friend, and six thieves, and thus enters the path of truth. The so-called six great enemies are the six external objects. A Bodhisattva Mahasattva realizes that the six objects are like six great enemies. Why is that? Because they steal all virtuous dharmas. Just as six enemies can steal all the wealth and jewels of people, so too are the enemies of the six objects, they can steal all the virtuous wealth of all sentient beings. Just as if six great enemies enter a person's house, they do not choose between good and bad things, but steal everything they can, even making the rich poor. The enemies of the six objects are also like that, if they enter a person's senses, they will steal all virtuous dharmas, and when virtuous dharmas are exhausted, one becomes poor and engages in deeds of wrong desire. Therefore, a Bodhisattva should truly realize that the six objects are like six great enemies. Furthermore, son of good family, if those six enemies intend to rob, they need an inside accomplice. If there is no inside accomplice, they will immediately retreat. The enemies of the six objects are also like that, if they intend to rob virtuous dharmas, they need to see and know the internal beings, as well as the characteristics of permanence, happiness, self, complete purity, and non-emptiness, and so on. If there is no clinging to such characteristics inside, then the fierce enemies of the six objects cannot steal all the virtuous dharmas. The wise, with wisdom, do not have such characteristics inside. But the ignorant have such characteristics, therefore the six objects always come to steal the wealth of virtuous dharmas, and because they are not well guarded, they are stolen. Guarding is wisdom, and those with wisdom, being well guarded, are not stolen.
