no longer existed. Therefore, Bodhisattvas should realize that the six realms are no different from the six great enemies. Thirty-first chapter. Furthermore, sons of good family, the six great enemies can cause the bodies and minds of other beings to be tormented by suffering. The enemies of the six realms are also like that, constantly tormenting the bodies and minds of sentient beings with three kinds of suffering. The six great enemies can only plunder present wealth, but the enemies of the six realms constantly plunder all the virtuous wealth of sentient beings in the three times. The six great enemies like the sun to set, and so do the fierce enemies of the six realms, who like to dwell in the darkness of ignorance. The six great enemies can be subdued by kings, and so can the fierce enemies of the six realms, who can be subdued by Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. If the six great enemies want to plunder, they will not choose good people or noble families, nor will they choose those with sharp faculties, the learned, the widely learned, the young and strong, the virtuous, the poor, or the lowly. The enemies of the six realms are also like that, if they want to plunder virtue, they will not choose from the good to the poor and lowly. Even if the six great enemies have their hands and feet cut off by kings, their minds cannot be pacified. The fierce enemies of the six realms are also like that, even if those who have entered the stream, those who return once, and those who do not return cut off their hands and feet, they cannot prevent them from plundering virtue. Brave men are able to tame and subdue the six great enemies. The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are also like that, able to tame and subdue the great enemies of the six realms. For example, the six enemies will not plunder those who have a strong and robust father. Sentient beings are also like that, if they have a virtuous friend, they will not be plundered by the fierce enemies of the six realms. If the six great enemies see the wealth of men, they can steal or plunder it. The six realms are not like that, they can plunder merely by seeing, knowing, hearing, smelling, touching, or feeling.

Sixth, it can only plunder the wealth of beings in the desire realm, but it cannot plunder the wealth of beings in the form and formless realms. The fierce enemy of the six objects is not like that; it can plunder all the precious treasures of virtue in the three realms. Therefore, a Bodhisattva should understand the six objects even more thoroughly than the six enemies. Having understood this, he will diligently practice the eight noble paths without reversing them, just like being afraid of those four poisonous snakes, five kinds of evil clans, a pretender who seems close, six great enemies, and an empty city, and then entering the path and leaving. The so-called encountering a great river on the road is affliction. How does a Bodhisattva understand that affliction is like a great river? Just as fierce water can carry away a cotton elephant made of incense, the water of affliction is also like that, it can carry away a Pratyekabuddha. Therefore, a Bodhisattva should understand affliction as fierce water. Because it is deep and difficult to measure, it is called a river of water. Because it has no end, it is called great, and there are various things in it such as untouchables. The great abyss of affliction is also like that; only Buddhas and Bodhisattvas can reach its bottom, so it is called very deep. Only Buddhas and Bodhisattvas can reach its edge, so it is called vast and great. Because it always harms all sentient beings, it is called untouchable. Therefore, a Bodhisattva should understand affliction as a great water. The water of a great abyss can produce all grass, trees, and forests. The water of the great abyss of affliction is also like that; it can produce the twenty-five existences of sentient beings. Therefore, a Bodhisattva should understand affliction as a great abyss. For example, if a person falls into a great river, he has no shame or hesitation. Sentient beings are also like that; if they fall into the water of affliction, they have no shame or hesitation. If one falls into great water, one will die before reaching the bottom. The water of affliction
