accompanied by a mind of harming. The five aggregates are also the same, constantly associated with all afflictions, hence accompanied by a mind of harming. Just as a person without legs, if lacking a sword, weapons, and attendants, will inevitably be killed by an evil clan without being devoured by demons. Sentient beings are also the same; without legs, without weapons, and without attendants, they will be killed by the five aggregates. 'Legs' refers to discipline. 'Sword' refers to wisdom. 'Attendant' refers to a virtuous friend. If these three are lacking, one will be harmed by the enemy of the five aggregates. Therefore, a Bodhisattva should regard the five aggregates as akin to an evil clan. Furthermore, son of good family, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should regard the five aggregates as even more terrible than an evil clan. Why is that? If a sentient being is killed by an evil clan, that sentient being will not fall into hell. If killed by the five aggregates, sentient beings will fall into hell. Therefore, a Bodhisattva should regard the five aggregates as more terrible than an evil clan. Having understood this, one should make this vow: 'I would rather dwell with an evil clan for an entire lifetime than desire to be near the five aggregates for even a moment.' An evil clan can only harm the fools of the desire realm, but the enemy of the five aggregates harms all vulgar, base, and foolish beings of the three realms. An evil clan only kills those who are guilty, but the enemy of the five aggregates harms and intensely injures all sentient beings, whether guilty or not. An evil clan does not harm the weak, the old, women, or young children. But the enemy of the five aggregates harms all sentient beings, whether old, young, or women. This is called a Bodhisattva regarding these five aggregates as more terrible than an evil clan. Therefore, one should vow, 'I would rather dwell with an evil clan for an entire lifetime than be near or associate with the five aggregates for even a moment.' Furthermore, son of good family, an evil clan only harms others, not oneself. But the enemy of the five aggregates harms oneself, others, and even the evil clan. An evil clan can be appeased with gentle words and precious jewels. But the five aggregates are not like that.
