All beings with bodies, if they encounter those four poisons, will come to the end of their lives. The four great elements of beings are also the same: seeing causes non-virtue, touching causes non-virtue, associating causes non-virtue, and eating causes non-virtue. Through those causes and conditions, all virtues will be abandoned. Furthermore, son of good family, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas contemplate the four poisonous snakes, and there are four castes. These are: the royal caste, the Brahmin caste, the Vaishya caste, and the Shudra caste. The four great snakes are also similar to this, having four natures. These are: the nature of solidity, the nature of moisture, the nature of warmth, and the nature of motion. Therefore, Bodhisattvas contemplate that the four great elements and the four poisonous snakes are similar in nature. Furthermore, son of good family, Bodhisattvas contemplate the four great elements as being like the four poisonous snakes. How do they contemplate them? The four poisonous snakes are always seeking opportunities with people, thinking, "When will I be able to see them? When will I be able to touch them? When will I be able to inhale them with my breath? When will I be able to eat them?" The four great poisonous snakes are also similar to this, always seeking the faults of beings. If one is killed by the four poisonous snakes, one will never go to the three lower realms. If one is killed by the four great elements, one will certainly go to the three lower realms without a doubt. Even if the four poisonous snakes are well-fed, they still think of killing people in return. The four great elements are also like this: even if they are always nourished and served, they always cause one to commit all non-virtues. If one of the four poisonous snakes becomes angry, it can kill a person. The nature of the four great elements is also like this: if one of the great elements is out of balance, it can also kill a person. Although the four poisonous snakes exist together, the minds of the four are separate. The four great poisonous snakes are also similar to this: although they exist together, their natures are separate. Even if one shows respect to those four poisonous snakes, it is difficult to get close to them. The four great poisonous snakes are also like this: even if one shows respect, it is difficult to get close to them.

It is difficult. If one is caught by the four poisonous snakes, then ascetics or Brahmins, etc., can cure them with mantras and medicine. If one is killed by the four great elements, then even if ascetics or Brahmins, etc., try to cure them with mantras and good medicine, they will not recover. Those who play with snakes, if touched by the scent of the four poisonous snakes, will try to avoid them. Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are also like that; if they sense the scent of the four great elements, they will try to avoid them. At that time, the Bodhisattva will think, 'I will generate great fear of the four great poisonous snakes, turn my back and quickly flee, and practice the Noble Eightfold Path.' The so-called five evil lineages are metaphors for the five aggregates. How does a Bodhisattva regard the five aggregates as evil lineages? The so-called evil lineage is that which always separates from friendly and lovable things, and associates with hostile and hateful things. The five aggregates are also like that, causing many beings to cling to and be close to unwholesome dharmas, and on the other hand, causing them to be separated from all wholesome dharmas. Furthermore, son of good family, for example, an evil lineage adorns itself with swords, shields, bows and arrows, armor, spears, and various weapons, and harms others. The five aggregates are also like that, being extremely adorned by afflictions, harming the foolish, and causing them to fall into samsara. Son of good family, an evil lineage kills if any evil arises. The five aggregates are also like that, always killing because they are accompanied by the evils of all afflictions. Therefore, the Bodhisattva regards the five aggregates as the five evil lineages. Furthermore, the Bodhisattva regards the five aggregates as an evil lineage; an evil lineage has no love or compassion, and kills both enemies and relatives. The five aggregates are also like that, having no love or compassion, and killing both good and evil. An evil lineage harms all people. The five aggregates are also like that, always harming sentient beings in samsara through afflictions. Therefore, the Bodhisattva regards the five aggregates as an evil lineage. An evil lineage always harms.
