It is called abandonment. In order to generate virtue, abandon sinful dharmas. The Bodhisattva Mahasattva perceives his own body as a disease, as a wound, as a swelling, as an enemy, as if the body were pierced by an arrow, and understands that this great heap of suffering is the root of all good and evil. Although this body is so impure, the Bodhisattva still heals and attends to it. Why is that? It is not because of attachment to the body, but for the sake of virtuous dharmas. For the sake of Nirvana, not for the sake of Samsara. For the sake of permanence, bliss, self, and purity, not for the sake of impermanence, suffering, non-self, and impurity. For the sake of the path of Bodhi, not for the sake of the path of existence. For the sake of the One Vehicle, not for the sake of the Three Vehicles. For the sake of the sacred body with the thirty-two marks and eighty minor marks, not for the sake of the body between the realm of neither perception nor non-perception. For the sake of the king who turns the wheel of Dharma, not for the sake of the Chakravartin king. Son of the family, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva should always protect the body. Why is that? If the body is not protected, one will not be able to survive. If one cannot survive, one will not be able to write, uphold, read, recite this sutra, or explain it extensively to others, or contemplate its meaning, therefore the Bodhisattva should protect the body very carefully. For the sake of such meaning, the Bodhisattva abandons all evil outflows. Son of the family, just as one crossing water would carefully protect the boat and raft. A traveler on the road would carefully take care of good horses and so on. A farmer would carefully protect fertilizer and so on. One who wants poison to be beneficial would carefully protect venomous snakes. One who possesses many riches would protect a person of the low Chandala caste. One who fights against an enemy would protect a capable person. Just as one protects fire from the cold. Just as lepers seek potent medicine, so too is the Bodhisattva Mahasattva.

Although I see this body as impure and full, I should still protect and serve it in order to uphold the Great Nirvana Sutra, but I should not be hasty or impoverished. Bodhisattvas, great beings, see no difference between a violent elephant and a bad friend. Why? Because both cause the destruction of the body. Bodhisattvas, great beings, do not fear violent elephants, but they greatly fear bad friends. Why? Because violent elephants can only destroy the body, not the mind. Bad friends can destroy both. A violent elephant can only destroy one physical body, but a bad friend can destroy limitless good bodies and limitless good minds. A violent elephant can only destroy an impure body, but a bad friend can destroy a pure body and a pure mind. A violent elephant can only destroy a body of flesh and blood, but a bad friend can destroy the Dharma body. Being killed by a violent elephant does not lead to the three lower realms, but being killed by a bad friend inevitably leads to the three lower realms. A violent elephant is an enemy of the body, but a bad friend is an enemy of good Dharma. Therefore, bodhisattvas should keep bad friends far away. Such defilements arise from not abandoning inferior things. Bodhisattvas do not generate defilements because they abandon them. If even bodhisattvas have no defilements, what need is there to mention the Tathagatas? Therefore, there are no defilements. What is close to defilements? All inferior things, such as clothes, food, bedding, and medicine, are taken to seek comfort for the body and mind. Seeking such wealth and committing various sins without realizing the fault leads to wandering in the three lower realms, and therefore it is called defilement. Bodhisattvas, great beings, do not

One completely abandons through renunciation. If one desires clothing, one may take it, but not for the sake of the body, but solely for the sake of the Dharma. Without generating pride and arrogance, but always maintaining a humble mind, not for the sake of adornment and beauty, but for shame, and to seek refuge from heat, cold, wind, heavy rain, mosquitoes, flies, and the fear of being devoured by venomous creatures. Even when dressing and eating, there is no attachment, not for the sake of the body, but always for the sake of the sacred Dharma. Not for the sake of weakness, but for the sake of sentient beings. Not for the sake of pride and arrogance, but for the sake of body and strength. Not for the sake of revenge and enemies, but to heal the wounds of hunger. Even if one obtains delicious food, one does not have attachment to it. Obtaining dwellings is also the same, not to be afflicted by attachment and arrogance, but to make it a place of Bodhi, to subdue the enemy of afflictions, and to obtain dwellings to protect against wind and heavy rain. Seeking medicine because of illness also has no attachment, not to live for the sake of the sacred Dharma, but to prolong life. Son of the lineage, just as a person afflicted with scabies is smeared with flour and butter, wrapped in clothes, and when pus and blood flow out, applies medicine to heal the scabies, and stays in a deep room to avoid the wind, so too, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva regards the body as a wound, covers it with clothes, seeks food because pus flows from the nine orifices, obtains dwellings to protect against wind and heavy rain, and seeks medicine to protect against the four poisons. A Bodhisattva obtains the four requisites for the sake of the path to Bodhi, not for the sake of survival. Why is that? A Bodhisattva Mahasattva thinks, if I do not obtain these four requisites, the body will become weak and unstable. If it becomes unstable, it will become unbearable to suffer. If it becomes unbearable to suffer, one will not be able to fully practice all virtuous Dharmas.
